Pleasant Valley rolls past Lehighton
After each game, Pleasant Valley softball coach Steve Caffrey gives his players a chance to speak up.
Bears senior Kelsey Miczak spoke up shortly after walking off the field with a 14-4 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton."I always let the kids bring something up after each game that they thought we did well," Caffrey said. "Today, Kelsey brought up the fact that when they scored, we just didn't hang our heads, we came back and scored some runs also."So was the case in yesterday's matchup, as each time Lehighton was able to cross home plate in the top half of an inning, Pleasant Valley came right back in the bottom half with some runs of their own.The Indians' Jocelyn Hunsicker opened up the scoring with a solo homerun over the centerfield fence in the first inning. It only took the Bears' lead-off hitter Jordan Meckes one swing of her bat to tie up the game. Meckes took the first pitch that she saw over the left-field fence. Madison Shaneberger then broke the tie with an RBI-single, which scored Brittney Bonser, who had singled earlier. Then, Miczak spoke just as loud with her actions as she did with her words, when she capped a five-run opening inning with a three-run homerun over the right-centerfield fence."In the first inning, they came out swinging right from the first pitch," Caffrey said. "In the first I thought we came out aggressive, but the second inning, I thought we went back to taking pitches. We had to have a little talk with them that they had to start swinging at strikes. If she's going to put it in there, you have to go in there and drive it. And, I think that's where they started having a little more confidence in themselves in swinging the bat."Both teams were unable to push any runs across home plate in the second. In the third inning however, after two straight walks to Saige Miller and Hunsicker, Amanda Loudon pulled the Indians within one run of the Bears with a three-run homerun. But, that was as close as the Indians would get to the Bears as the host answered once again in the bottom half of the third. After back-to-back doubles by Crystal Morales and Miczak, Katie Lenart laced a two-run single to right field scoring both Morales and Miczak. And, then after back-to-back singles by Meckes and Bonser, Madison Shaneberger drilled the game's fifth homerun with a three-run blast, which finished off a six run third for the Bears. While the Indians didn't cash in on any runs in the fourth, the Bears still were able to plate three more runs to enforce the 10-run rule, which ended the game in the fifth inning after the visitors failed to capitalize on any opportunities in the fifth.Still, Lehighton coach Greg Poremba felt his team gave it their all out on the diamond regardless of the setback they faced that day."The score definitely doesn't indicate how well we played," Poremba said. "I mean that's a good team, a good hitting team over there. The girls came alive today. They hit the ball. They put it in play. And, they showed that they can generate some runs. We just have to continue that. Their attitudes are very positive right now. And, we have two more games this week. We will take it one game at a time."In fact, Kelsie Andrew had a super day at the plate for the Indians as she finished with three hits, including two doubles and a single. Meanwhile, PV's Meckes came up with four hits on the day, which included three singles, a homerun, three RBIs and two runs scored.Miczak ended up with a double, home run, three RBIs and three runs scored in four plate appearances.Lehighton 103 00 - 4 6 3Pleasant Vy. 506 3x - 14 16 2Binyon and Andrews; Deubler and Caffrey.
