Tamaqua fires police officer

Tamaqua Borough Council terminated the employment of full time police officer Karl Harig Tuesday night.

The action came after an executive session to discuss personnel matters during Tuesday's regular council meeting.Council President David Mace said the termination came after it was recommended by both Chief of Police Rick Weaver and Mayor Christian Morrison. Other than saying it was a personnel issue, Mace did not comment on the reasons behind the termination.Officer Harig began his probationary period with the department in 2007 and was hired full time by the borough in 2008. Mace said the borough will fill the full time position; however, there is no timeline for to happen. "I feel that we have enough of a roster of part-time officers to make sure those shifts are covered for the time being," said Mace.In other police business, council hired Tanner Noecker and Jonathan Troyer as part-time police officers, effective immediately. They also made a motion to send Christian DeAngelo and Matthew Green conditional offers of employment as part time police officers. Weaver said both officers will be graduating from the police academy in the near future and need the conditional offers to complete some of their registrations. Council also accepted the resignation of part time officer Bryce Lewis, who has obtained full time employment elsewhere.Weaver notified council he has been offered $1,500 for the department's Ford Explorer from Kovatch. The $1500 has been offered as trade in value on the vehicle and can be put toward the department's new vehicle. Council approved the trade-in.
