O'Brien, Snukis repeat in 25th annual Truskey Run

Justin O'Brien of Hamburg and Samantha Snukis of Stowe, Montgomery County, repeated as champions during the 25th annual Truskey Memorial Run on Sunday at Tuscarora State Park.

O'Brien was the first male finisher and Snukis the first female finisher in the 5K run, just as they were a year ago.O'Brien had a time of 16:29, which was better than his time of 16:45 last year. On his heels was second-place finisher Dylan Bucior, a senior at Jim Thorpe High School.Bucior, who was first in the male 14-18 division, crossed the tape two seconds behind O'Brien.Snukis, who last year won the ladies' race in a time of 19:14, was one second slower this year. There was a lot of competition for her. Margaret Benny Klimek of Arlington, Virginia, who won the age 30-34 division, had a time of 20:23. Behind her was the Jim Thorpe duo of Kayley Kovac and Delana Nalesnik, both Jim Thorpe High School students, with times of 20:30 and 20:33 respectively.Over 300 runners participated in the race held in memory of Chris Truskey, who died in September 1990 just a few months after high school graduation, and Chris' younger brother, Kevin, who died in 2002. Both lost their young lives in auto accidents. They were the sons of Wayne and Pat Truskey of West Penn Township.Proceeds from the race provide scholarships for Tamaqua Area High School seniors. So far the races have provided more than $70,000 in scholarships, said Wendy Dunkelberger of Tamaqua, a coordinator.Wayne Truskey awarded the plaques and medals after the race. Pat assisted with registration. In the 10K race, Eric Oertner of New Tripoli finished first in 44:53 while Bonnie Natt of Drums took the female category with a time of 51:04.Last year's male 10K winner, Gary Clemson of Tamaqua, won the 45-49 age class with a time of 46:04. Clemson completed the run last year in the impressive time of 44:03.The top female runner in 10K in 2014 was Jenna Hahn of Schuylkill Haven, who didn't compete this year. The top male walker this year was Jeff Knutson of Saylorsburg, while the best time of female walkers was attained by Betty McCall of Summit Hill.Probably the oldest competitors were sisters Joan Houser of Tamaqua, 76, and Catherine Shade, 87, of Reading.Houser ran in the 5K race and won her division in a time of 52:15.Shade walked but Houser insists that if Shade been in the run, the older sister would have won. Both have competed in the 5K run in about 20 of the Truskey runs. Shade wasn't able to run this year because of a bulging disc."I keep doing it because it's for a good cause," Shade said, adding that she keeps in shape by working out with a gym instructor twice a week.John Heycock of York Haven crossed the line with his two Hungarian Vizsla dogs, Maisey, 2, and Duncan, 11. Heycock said Maisey went the full 10K distance, but he picked Duncan up near the finish line due to the canine's age.Heycock said he and Duncan have done the 10K about eight or nine times. He said his father, John Heycock, is originally from Summit Hill.Dunkelberger, who was a founder of the race, said her sons were good friends of Chris and Kevin Truskey. She recalled that Chris practiced cross-country running at Tuscarora and Kevin won his Schuylkill medal on the Tuscarora course.Numerous high school teams took part, including squads from Tamaqua, Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley, Weatherly, Pottsville, Blue Mountain, North Schuylkill and Conrad Weiser.
