Salisbury rallies to edge NL
Both teams needed the win badly and wanted it just as much. With Salisbury and Northern Lehigh's softball teams' overall records hovering right around the .500 mark and the season winding down, the Falcons and Bulldogs put their best games out on the field in hopes of the win.
After the Lady 'Dawgs jumped out to a 5-0 lead, the Salisbury bats came to life and mounted a comeback that resulted in a 7-6 win."This was tremendous for our kids' self esteem," Salisbury head coach Ken Choquette said. "I'm so proud of their ability to stay in the game and not get down on themselves. It would have been so easy for them to do it, too."In the bottom of the third, Northern Lehigh put up five runs. An RBI single by starting pitcher Amber Thomas got the 'Dawgs on the board first. A two-run triple by Sage Hargreaves eventually capped the outburst. That's when the Lady Falcons began to go to work. In the top of the fourth, Kelly Garrigan walked and Meghan Williams followed with a single. A throwing error allowed both runners to score. The Bulldogs tacked on their final run in the bottom of the fourth when Shannon Weil singled, stole second, and went to third on a Kiana Marlatt sacrifice bunt. Thomas belted another RBI single to left for a 6-2 lead.Brooke Rogers came on in relief for Salisbury in the top of the fifth and the different look gave the 'Dawgs some issues as Rogers held her opponent scoreless the rest of the way."We use both pitchers in our rotation and when we make a switch, they have such differing styles, it kind of gives teams a different look and keeps them off balance," Choquette said. The Falcons tied the game in the top of the sixth as Williams led off with a single, before Rachel Costantini brought her in with a triple. Rogers helped her cause with a RBI double and eventually scored on an infield single by Hadinger to tie the game at 6-6..Marlatt's double started the bottom half of the frame, but the Falcons' Rogers retired the side to end the threat. In the top of the seventh, Thalya Cresswell and Garrigan started off with consecutive singles and Williams' groundout scored the winning run."(Salisbury) hit the ball in the later innings," Northern Lehigh head coach Bob Hicks said. "We let it slip away."With the win, Salisbury improves to 7-6 overall and 6-5 in the Colonial League. Northern Lehigh falls to 6-7 overall and 4-6 in the league.Salisbury 000 213 1 - 7 10 2No. Lehigh 005100 0 - 6 9 2Garrigan, Rogers (5) and Cresswell; Thomas and Yesik. W - Rogers, L - Thomas.
