Thorpe blanks Panthers in three innings
It's hard for a school to have a young and rebuilding team in any sport. With that being said, every program does go through this phase once in a while.
Two teams that are both young and rebuilding are Jim Thorpe and Panther Valley. Jim Thorpe showed signs of a bright future on Wednesday, as the Olympians won convincingly, 15-0 over their Schuylkill League Division I rivals."There's a bright future for Jim Thorpe softball here. The other freshman that came in defensively are going to fill the slots of the seniors next year," said Jim Thorpe coach Bernice Bott.Everything can certainly click once in a while, even for a young team like the Olympians.Everything went Jim Thorpe's way in the first inning as they scored 11 runs and never looked back."We were patient today and I'm happy about that," said Bott. "We looked for the strikes and we swung at them. We struggled at being discipline at the plate this season so far and it is encouraging that we were today."The Olympians drew three of their eight walks in the first inning. In fact, every Olympian in the starting lineup got on base during the contest.Brittany Loftus is one of the seniors on the Jim Thorpe squad who had an impressive day at the dish. Loftus had a single, a double, and two RBIs in the game."Brittany is a senior this year who has done such a great job for us both defensively and offensively this year and every year. She's been a real leader to this team which had a lot of freshman on it, which I really admire." said the Olympian coach.Bott also credited Gianna Bucci and Ciara Miranda in playing great during the Olympian victory. Bucci showed maturity at the plate, as she drew three walks in the contest. Miranda had two singles and knocked in three RBIs.Finally, the Olympian's freshman starting pitcher Maggie Holloway was brilliant during the game's three innings.Holloway threw three innings of no hit softball; striking out three, and walking two Panthers. Holloway held the Panthers to mostly ground ball outs during their eleven plate appearances during the contest."She's one of our three young pitchers who are very disciplined and work very hard," Bott explained. "Maggie is one of the hardest workers on the team and it shows and her effort certainly shows. We have a really good bunch of girls who know that its takes a lot of hard work to get it done."Bott is satisfied with her squad's attitude and performance so far in the young season. She believes that this program will be very competitive in the foreseeable future."It's awesome to get some talent coming into the program," said Bott "The pitching staff that came in is all freshmen and you can really see some things that we've been working on the last couple of years starting to come together now. It's been a long time coming for this group and I really couldn't be happier with the way that they're performing this season."Jim Thorpe 11 3 1 - 15 4 0Panther Vy. 0 0 0 - 0 0 11Holloway and Kehrli; Damela, Beers (1) and Rodriguez.
