On Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville will be celebrating 60 years of Eloise. The library will be hosting an Eloise Tea.Come dressed in your best for some tea, snacks and lots of stories and activities to celebrate Eloise is the invitation. The system is based on functional fitness, which focuses on building a body capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions. The WorldTrail Fitness system provides a full-body challenge designed for all ages and skill levels. The multistation system features step-by-step instructional signs that guide users through three different exercises at each station, each with options for beginner and advance levels.This equipment was made possible by an ESSA Foundation Grant Award.Community dinnerAmerican Legion Post 927 is hosting a free community Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at the Post home in Gilbert.Call 610-681-5838 to register your attendance.Thanksgiving feastThe Effort United Methodist Church is hosting its 11th Annual Community Thanksgiving Feast on Thanksgiving Day.Invitations are extended to those home alone this Thanksgiving, those who are not quite able to provide a full feast for their loved ones, to come and join together at the church for a time of thanks, fellowship and, of course, lots of food.Fellowship Hour with light hors d'oeuvres will be served at 2 p.m., followed by opening prayer, traditional Thanksgiving feast, dessert and closing devotions. A kid's corner is set up with games and activities and there is also a TV set up to watch the parade or the game of the day.Seating is available for 100 people by reservations, recommended but not necessary. Also give your name and phone number in case staff is unable to locate the deer.Service renderedGFWC Western Pocono Women's Club designed, cut and sewed 15 quilts which will be distributed to veterans at Getz Personal Care Home, VALOR, Brookmont, and Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Home. The club, along with local Girl Scout troops and the community, created and signed over 1,000 handmade Christmas cards. The cards were made from recycled Christmas cards, signed by the women's club, the Girl Scout troops and some community members who attended Chestnuthill Township Day. The messages showed the military the support from home and wished them a merry Christmas.These cards will be sent to the Wilkes-Barre VA Hospital, Operation Touch of Home, VALOR, Parris Island, South Carolina, and to other locations where troops are serving at home and abroad.Monthly, the club sends about $20,000 worth of coupons to a naval base in Okinawa, Japan, to help out the service personnel and their families. Judging by the thank-you notes received by the club, these coupons are greatly appreciated by the sailors and their families.Lioness serviceMore than 50 families attended the Western Pocono Lioness Kookies & Krafts event at the Chestnuthill Park this past Saturday. Some 150 children along with their parents and grandparents enjoyed the day that included Kris Kringle, one free picture per family, storytelling, free Kookies and Krafts and free Kids ID Cards.New classThe next stained glass class has been scheduled for the Eldred Township Community Center in Kunkletown. For more information, call 570-629-0649.Driver courseFormerly 55-Alive, the new Smart Driver course is designed for qualified drivers 50 and older. There are no tests and membership in the AARP is not necessary. All automobile insurance companies doing business in Pennsylvania are required by state law to give a minimum discount of 5 percent to all qualified policy holders age 55 and over who take the course. Participants should be sure to first check with their respective insurance agent or company to make sure they qualify to receive a discount.All classes are taught by trained, unpaid volunteer Instructors. The eight-hour class is given in a two-day period in two four-hour sessions, and is required for first timers. The one-day four-hour class is only open to those who provide evidence of taking a class during the last 36 months. A fee is charged for either class. Class size is limited, so advance reservations are advised to assure placement in class. Those completing the course will be issued a certificate which is valid for three years. AARP members need their membership number at class time to be charged a lower fee.
