Northwestern 'finishes' off Nolehi

An incomplete project at the end of the work day on Friday being left for the return to work Monday could potentially be either good or bad.

When given the weekend to think about the 'unfinished business' it could present a fresh outlook upon the return. On the other hand, the motivation that was there Friday may not be present when attacking the same issue after the brief layoff.Such was the case for the Colonial League softball battle between Northern Lehigh and Northwestern, as the two teams squared off Friday at Pates Park. After playing and completing four innings, inclement weather halted the contest and transplanted the remaining three innings to Monday at Northern Lehigh. After mounting a 4-1 lead in the first four frames, the Lady Tigers would have to put their lead, and potential win, on hold for the weekend, travel to Slatington, and pick up where they left off.Northwestern did exactly that. Thanks to solid defense and Lydia Danner's strong pitching, the Tigers held on for the 4-1 Colonial League victory.Danner was tough again on the mound for the victors, as she went the distance in the game, and came up big down the stretch."Getting beat by them last time was definitely not fun," Danner said to the media in reference to an extra-inning Bulldog victory earlier this season. "So I think coming back and playing solid today was big. We were more pumped up because that last time we weren't on point. We wanted to make it a 'W' this time."Early on, it was the Tigers that strung together enough offense, posting a single run in each of the first four innings to build what proved to be enough of an advantage.Neither team plated a run throughout Monday's conclusion of the game as both defenses remained steadfast."Our defense played really well," Northern Lehigh head coach Robert Hicks said. "I thought it was a good, favorable transition for us, and it's a rivalry game. Northwestern is a big rivalry for us and I thought we could do it, but we just couldn't string together enough hits."In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs managed to spark up opportunity, as they put runners on first and second with two outs. However, Danner slammed the door, striking out the next batter to end the potential threat. She then continued into the bottom of the seventh, by earning consecutive groundouts and a pop up to shallow right to end the game."We just played a solid game," outfielder Erynn Day said to the press following the game. "We had great pitching and good defense."They are our rivals, so it was sweet to beat them this time."Sunny Greenberg finished the game, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Tigers. Callie Rehrig also came up big with two doubles and a run scored.Meanwhile, Amber Thomas, who also pitched a complete game for Northern Lehigh, posted an RBI double to drive in her team's only run of the game. Taylor Herman had a hit and scored a run for the Bulldogs. While both teams are alive and have plenty of games remaining on their schedules, the Tigers and Lady Bulldogs are both hovering around the .500 mark and realize the importance of each game. However, with the postponements and re-scheduling of games, there will be little chance to rest, or practice, for either team the rest of the season."The girls were up for it Friday and they were up for it today," Hicks added. "But sometimes you get the bear and other times the bear gets you."Northwestern 111 100 0 - 4 8 1No. Lehigh 100 000 0 - 1 5 2Danner and Greenberg; Thomas and Hargreaves. W - Danner, LP - Thomas.
