Blue Bombers hold off No. Lehigh

For Bob Hock, the scene was all too familiar.

After building a 10-4 lead in the sixth inning, the Palmerton softball coach watched Northern Lehigh score three runs and load the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. But unlike what he's witnessed on several other occasions this season, Hock saw the Lady Bombers hold on and secure a crucial 10-7 Colonial League North Division victory."This was very indicative of a lot of our games this year, where we do score a lot of runs. Unfortunately, we also give a lot away at times," said Hock. "We put some runners on through hits and some (Northern Lehigh) fielding miscues out there. But we just let teams back into it."Northern Lehigh (7-9, 5-7) almost completed its second comeback of the game in the seventh after erasing a 4-1 deficit earlier in the game. But the Lady Bulldogs were simply unable to finish, leaving the bases loaded.Despite coming up short, Northern Lehigh coach Bob Hicks was pleased with the relentless effort he got from his team."We don't give up. We teach that everyday," he said. "There are three strikes in every at bat and seven innings in every game. You don't give up until the end, especially when you're playing one of your rivals."After Northern Lehigh scored three runs in the top of a rain-delayed fifth to tie the game 4-4, Palmerton (10-7, 6-7) responded by batting around and scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth."We just made a bunch of mistakes in that inning," said Hicks. "I can't take anything away from Palmerton, they came back and played well."Luckily for Hicks, his team will get another chance this week when the two teams meet again."We just need to do better," he said. "And when we play them again on Wednesday, we will do better."While admittedly happy with the win and the performance of his offense, Hock knows his team will have to make adjustments moving forward."I'm satisfied that we can come back and have the offense produce like it does; there are certainly a lot of positives to take from that," he said. "But we have to fix the negatives that show up from time-to-time in these games."A quick glance at Palmerton's final stat line shows that the production came from throughout the lineup. But the catalyst for the Lady Bombers was Janel Tracy, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and an inside-the-park home run to start the scoring in the first and give the Lady Bombers an early 2-0 lead. After reaching the district championship game last season, Tracy knows any regular season experience playing in close games will only benefit a team that features only one senior on its roster."I'm happy that we didn't get down on ourselves when times were tough," the junior said. "I think the fact that we were able to pull it together will really help us in the postseason when things might be at their worst."I think this is a good wake-up call that we don't want those little errors to happen. We just want to get the win right away."In addition to Tracy, Abby Reimer and Lauren Campbell also had three hit games, while Stephanie Brinker chipped in two hits and two RBIs.The Lady Bombers also got a strong showing in the circle from starting pitcher Kendra Pekurny, who struck out five in seven innings of work. When the sophomore wasn't locating her pitches, Northern Lehigh's Taylor Herman was able to take advantage. Herman finished 3-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Cassie Toth finished 2-for-4 with one run batted in and two runs scored.No. Lehigh 001 030 3 - 7 8 1Palmerton 210 106 x - 10 13 1Thomas and Hargreaves; Pekurny and Campbell. W - Pekurny.
