Bears top Solehi
On Monday afternoon, Pleasant Valley's Jon White and Jon Walmach captured the District 11 Class AAA Doubles championship.
On Tuesday, the Bears showed what the rest of the lineup is capable of accomplishing.No. 3 seed Pleasant Valley breezed past No. 6 seed Southern Lehigh 4-1 in the first round of the District 11 Class AAA Team Tournament, avenging last year's opening round setback to the Spartans by the same score. After White and Walmach played for over two hours the previous day, Pleasant Valley coach Mark Allison knew the Bears' success would hinge on the contributions of those other than his top singles' players. What he got was a sweep in doubles' play and victories in two of the three singles' matches."It was huge," Allison said of the performances. "Our doubles' players really came through for us. We knew Southern Lehigh had very good doubles' (teams) coming in to this, and that was somewhat of a concern for us."But both teams really rose to the occasion and played great tennis today."Brandon Percey and Erik Ammermann along with Eric Galante and Kevin Bantel each picked up straight set victories. Those performances proved to be even more vital when Walmach was forced to pull out of his match against Jake Kohler in the third set after aggravating a groin injury he suffered in the final on Monday."It felt okay coming into the match," said Walmach. "I was up 4-1 in the first set and kind of stretched it out a little bit, which didn't feel good. I was able to win the set, but couldn't move after that."I tried to scrape through, but just couldn't finish it."While disappointed he couldn't add to the Bears' success, Walmach was happy to see his teammates do well."It's amazing that they stepped up like that," he said of the team. "I was confident, but I knew it was going to be a tight match and it's great that they came through."For White, the only thing that carried over from the previous day was some extra confidence, which was obvious in his 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jason Renner."It definitely helped," he said. "But I knew that I had to get off of the emotional high and just play my game today. I just tried staying mentally sound and focus on playing well."The Bears will now turn their attention to a familiar foe in semifinal opponent and No. 2 seed Stroudsburg, which defeated No. 7 seed Nazareth 5-0 in its first round match. The Mounties defeated Pleasant Valley in both of their regular season matches."I feel good going into it," Allison said. "We'll have to see about Jon (Walmach). But overall, I feel good."Both of our matches this season were close, and I think this will be another one. It's nice to get another crack at them."Injured or not, the opportunity to play Stroudsburg one more time at Pleasant Valley is what's driving Walmach."I am absolutely going to try to play on Thursday," he said. "That's a big match and I definitely want to be out there with the team."Pleasant Valley 4, So. Lehigh 1SINGLESJon White (PV) def.
