Bears take care of business
Top-seeded Pleasant Valley could've looked ahead, even just a bit, to a potential spot in the Mountain Valley Conference softball championship game.
But that isn't what head coach Steve Caffrey's team is all about. All the Bears were focused on was the task at hand a semifinal matchup against Pocono Mountain East. And they proved that from their first inning of play on Wednesday. The Bears scored a pair of runs in their first atbat and added runs in each of the next five frames to close out the Cardinals,12-2, in six innings. While many expected Pleasant Valley to compete for a fourth-consecutive league title, Caffrey and his squad didn't take the No. 4 seeded Lady Cardinals lightly."Even though we're the top seed, you still want to play your hardest because you never know what can happen," said Kelsey Miczak, who went 3-for-4 (three doubles) and two RBIs. "We definitely didn't take today for granted. We played hard and came out with a good win."The victory sets up a rematch against Stroudsburg for the MVC championship on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Pocono Mountain East High School. Stroudsburg is responsible for the Bears' lone conference this season, coming in the regular season finale."I don't want to say we expect to be there, but it's something that we worked towards," Caffrey said. "This is only one game out of the two. Without winning that we worked towards," Caffrey said. "This is only one game out of the two. Without winning the second game, you really haven't won anything."Kiersten Griesback and Brittney Bonser both scored on passed balls for Pleasant Valley (17-4 overall; 12-1 in MVC) in the first inning to get the scoring started. In the next frame, Jordan Meckes launched a double to deep centerfield that scored Miczak. Two more runs came across later in the inning on a PM East infield error. That gave Griesback who picked up the win after striking out seven and allowing two runs in six innings an early 5-0 lead that was more enough of a cushion."It gives you a lot of confidence on the mound," Griesback said, "because you know your team is behind you, and you know you have a little leeway to work with. Even if you're not on your best game, you have your team behind you."Caffrey was thrilled with the effort from his pitcher."Kiersten is a pitcher that gets the ball over the plate," said Caffrey. "She pitched a good game, [and] she was able to mix some pitches in and get some strikeouts."The Lady Cardinals (7-12 overall; 6-7 in MVC) scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but the Lady Bears' offense across the lineup continued to step on the pedal offensively.Miczak ended Pleasant Valley's three-run fourth inning with a double to left centerfield that made it a 9-1 game. Meckes scored in the fifth before Miczak recorded another RBI double in the sixth that made it 11-2 in favor of the Lady Bears. Meckes's RBI single three batters later put the 10-run rule into effect to end the game."I've been in a little slump the past three games," Miczak said. "But today, I came out with a lot more confidence. I know these are the games that matter the most, so I wanted to make them count."While the players certainly have their eyes set on some revenge against the Mounties, Caffrey insists that his emphasis isn't on who the opponent is. All he wants is his team to capitalize on the game plan and compete for another crown."If we can play somebody else, that would be fine," Caffrey said. "I'm just looking to make sure our girls come out ready to play tomorrow. It just so happens that Stroudsburg and PV have a decent rivalry right now.""We love playing Stroudsburg because it's our biggest competition," Miczak said. "We're looking forward to playing them again tomorrow, and we really hope we come out with the win."PM East 000 110 - 2 7 7Pleasant Vy. 231 312 - 12 11 0Griesback and Caffrey; Beyers, Smith (4), Beyers (4) and Bishop; W - Griesback L - Beyers
