Six-run first lifts Schuy. Vy. to victory over Blue Sox
Sometimes, all it takes is one big inning to make the difference in the outcome of a game.
In Tuesday's Schuylkill-Berks Legion North Division contest against Tamaqua, Schuylkill Valley got just that. The Falcons pounced on the Blue Sox with six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 6-1 win. After scoring three runs in the first inning of Monday's 11-3 league win over Valley View, Schuylkill Valley coach Ed Vaz admitted he was pleased with the recent play of his offense."In these last two games, we've come out really strong," Vaz said. "We're starting to come around with the bats a little bit, and that's big."The Falcons (4-5) wasted little time in the decisive first inning, as leadoff hitter Bobby Grigas opened the game by lining the first pitch for a single. The visitors proceeded to bat around, notching four hits while also taking advantage of two Tamaqua errors to blow the game open. But the bats went mostly silent for the remaining six innings, as Schuylkill Valley managed only three hits against Tamaqua (3-3) starter Tim Lehman and reliever Nate MacDonald, who pitched a scoreless seventh."He really settled down," Vaz said of Lehman, who allowed only one walk in the contest. "We stayed aggressive at the plate, we just didn't get the key hit. We left eight guys on base. If we get a couple more hits, then we're really going."Grigas, Kyle Kaledas and Derrick Reese, who all finished with two hits, fueled the Falcons' offense, which also produced four stolen bases.Despite only three hits, two of which came from MacDonald, Tamaqua certainly had its chances to cut into the deficit on several occasions. But the Blue Sox left a total of four men on base, and were unable to capitalize on having runners in scoring position in four of the seven innings.Afterwards, Tamaqua coach Todd Heisler took the blame for failing to take advantage of the scoring chances."When we got runners on, I made some bad calls," he said. "We tried to be aggressive to get back in the game, but it didn't happen."The Blue Sox got on the board in the sixth when Pete Baddick, who got on base with his second walk of the game, scored from third on an Owen Bates groundout.Tamaqua's Daylon Brown finished 1-for-2 and also got on base in the seventh when a pitch hit him between the numbers. Matt Roberts notched three walks in all of his plate appearances. While the disappointment from the loss was undeniable, the Blue Sox will be able to get back on track immediately with five league games scheduled over the next five days, starting with an away contest today against Valley View."I'm expecting to turn it up a little bit now," said Heisler. "I have 15-players on the roster this year, and I think we will be in good shape once we get everybody here."So does Vaz."They've got a good team," Vaz said of Tamaqua. "I have no doubt that they'll be fine."Schuylkill Vy. 600 000 0 - 6 7 0Tamaqua 000 001 0 - 1 3 6Hummel, Grigas (6) and De. Reese; Lehman, MacDonald (7) and O. Bates. WP - Hummel. LP - Lehman.
