Tamaqua falls in slugfest
Runs usually come at a premium in post-season play. This wasn't the case in the Section 6 10-11 Little League tournament elimination game between Tamaqua and Pennridge, however.
Tamaqua didn't score in the top of the first, which proved to be critical as it was the only half inning a run wasn't scored during the contest. With the game tied up at 17-17 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Pennridge's Sean Clayton was able to beat the throw home, as Stephen Nace hit the ball hard on the ground to first base in what proved to be the game winning run. It gave Pennridge a 18-17 victory. Both teams smashed the ball in the contest, as there were 30 hits in the game."With a score like this both you can tell both teams wanted to keep playing baseball," said Tamaqua head coach Mike VanBuskirk.Stephen Nace and Will Rawa were two Pennridge standouts in the cluttered box score. Nace had three hits and drove in three runs, and Rawa had three hits of his own including a two-run home run that cleared the right field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning."Will brings his A game every day and today, it was an A plus game," said Pennridge head coach Dave Tatoian. "The boys were a little worried about the curve balls, but we were patient and stayed on top of the ball. Kudos to them, it was great work."Sometimes we have a lot of defense and sometime we have a lot of offense, that's the thing about Pennridge, the kids come to play both ways. Sometimes we come out flat on offense and we play well defensively and sometimes it's the exact opposite."Tamaqua had production across the board, as 10 different players contributed hits in the contest. Luke VanBuskirk was a force at the plate for Tamaqua, as he went four-for-four including two crushed home runs that lead to his five RBIs in the game."Luke had a great game today for us," the Tamaqua coach said. "We talked yesterday after he had a few bad at bats. He was more focused and relaxed today and it showed. He crushed the ball today; he never hit the ball that far before."In the previous game between these two clubs last week, Tamaqua won by a seven-run margin. Van Buskirk couldn't be more proud of his 2014 Tamaqua all-star team."Unfortunately, today, Pennridge had the last at-bat," he said. "These kids give it everything they have every time they step on the field. They have their hearts invested in this and they never quit. We started about a month ago with this team and it was great how they gelled together in such a short amount of time. The kids grew so much as a team and always picked each other up."Tamaqua 051 452 - 17 19 2Pennridge 511 551 - 18 13 2VanBuskirk, Milot(1), Agosti (5), Steigerwalt(6) and Milot, Steigerwalt; Rawa, Clayton(2), Curry(2), Johnson(6) and Clayton, Curry.
