Snerr leads Marian past WV

Last year in Marian's season opener, KJ Snerr spent most of the night sitting in the emergency room. The Colts' quarterback seriously inured his shoulder on the first play of the 2013 campaign against Lehighton and missed most of the season.

2014 however, is a much different story. Snerr showed that his shoulder is stronger than ever along with his ability to run the football. Now a running back, Snerr came up with big play after big play for the Colts on Friday night, helping them capture an 18-7 non-league victory over a tough Williams Valley team from the Tri-Valley League.Snerr finished the night with 163 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just 15 carries. He also caught a pass for 37 yards. Most of his carries on the evening were productive, but none was bigger than his 65-yard touchdown scamper with 5:32 left in the ball game.Williams Valley, on its previous possession, closed within five points after a 22-yard touchdown run by Vikings' running back Matt Miller. The Vikes score certainly made things interesting and it was evident that if the Colts wanted to win they had to answer the bell on their next possession.Enter Snerr, who took a hand off and hit the hole hard on the right side of the line, going the distance and sealing the victory for the Colts."I can't even begin to explain how great tonight was," said Snerr. "A year ago I hit rock bottom after I was injured and I told myself that I was going to work harder than anyone else. I actually was inspired by Tim Tebow, who said that same thing while he was at Florida and that's the approach I took to this season. I worked really hard in the off-season and I gave it my best shot today and everything worked out."The second biggest play of the night might of belonged to Snerr as well. With the Colts up just 6-0 and under 30 seconds remaining in the second quarterback Ethan Kuczynski found Snerr on a 37-yard bomb that got them down to the five yard line. Kuczynksi and the Colts hustled down to the line quickly, got the play off, and then Kuczynski found wide receiver Angelo Maskornick in the end zone as time expired. That gave Marian a 12-0 advantage heading into the locker room.Besides Snerr and his impressive play, it was the Marian defense that showcased its abilities as well. The Colts simply came after Williams Valley quarterback Nick Rodichock time and time again and were successfull, sacking him a total of eight times. The Colts got pressure from the middle and from the edge and the Vikings just didn't have an answer."Our defense was outstanding tonight," said Marian head coach Stan Dakosty. "They have some good skill kids and they can spread you out and our kids just did a great job. We kinda weren't sure how we were going to be defensively and now we can really build off a performance like tonight. Our whole front four created a lot of pressure. A guy like Angelo Maskornick, who is just as good on the defensive side of the ball as he is offensively, which is something people really don't realize and then another kid like AJ Wolk, who played well in his first start tonight. Overall, just a great team effort defensively."Even though the Colts came out on top against a solid opponent the night was not mistake free. They turned it over three times and gave the Vikings pretty good field position on multiple occassions. Still, the defense stood tall and to Daoksty that was the top storyline of the game."We definitely made some mistakes tonight," said Dakosty. "First game of the year, that tends to happen, but the key is that all of the mistakes we made are correctable mistakes. Our defensive pressure really helped make up for those mistakes as well. Now, we have to go get ready for a big rival in Panther Valley next week where we're looking to lessen the mistakes we made tonight."
