Lehighton sweeps Tamaqua
It's imortant to set the tone early in a volleyball match.
Lehighton did exactly that in a 25-10, 25-9, 25-12 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua on Tuesday. The Indians reeled off runs of nine and ten consecutive points during the opening game and rode that early momentum to the sweep."Our girls were pretty excited to open up league play," said Lehighton head coach TJ O'Connor. "I think we executed well tonight."Both Lehighton and Tamaqua are very young with a combined total of just five seniors between them.Keeping that in mind, O'Connor saw some encouraging play from a pair of his Indian sophomores."Katie Higgins had a good night out there," said O'Connor. "We recently changed her back row position and she did a good job adjusting to that change. Our setter Victoria Eades-Rodriguez also had a strong night serving and set the ball well for us."Higgins had six kills and three aces in the match while Eades-Rodriguez contributed 13 assists, eight aces, and two kills.Tamaqua head coach Stacy Setlock explained that her two seniors do a great job in keeping the Raiders' morale up even while trailing in contests."Vanessa (Solt) is definitely a huge positive influence in terms of attitude and keeping the team together. Yeni (Benigno DeJesus) is our other senior and she is always right there with Vanessa bringing the team together." Solt had three kills and two digs in the contest for the Raiders. The Tamaqua coach is still trying to find a lineup in which her girls will best compliment one another."We have some height and skill this year. I 'm just looking around to find what set rotation will work," Setlock said. "I don't have that right now and I'm still playing around with it. Our third set was our best tonight, so I'll probably start with that group tomorrow against Schuylkill Haven."This is one of the best years in terms of attentiveness and attitude. This group is young and I don't expect them to be superstars, but I expect them to take what I am teaching them and use it and I am definitely seeing that from the team."Lehighton picked up its second win of the young season and O'Connor wants to improve the consistency of this young Indian squad."Our serving needs to be stronger and offensively we need to find a way to score more points," said O'Connor. "The more they play and the more swings they get, the more consistent they will become."We're going to have our ups and downs this season. Our three seniors do a great job in terms of leadership and calming down the younger girls. All of the kids have a different personality and are always excited. They're so much fun to be around and I wouldn't want to coach any other team."
