Fillies reach final again

MINERSVILLE - "Attack, attack, and attack" is the constant strategy of Marian head coach John Fallabel and his Fillies.

The Fillies manafactured 80 attacks that resulted in 32 kills during its Schuylkill League playoff sweep of Millersburg, 25-14, 25-9, 25-18."We always play our game," said Fallabel. "We play the same game all of the time. Aggressive serving with solid defense. We're not the greatest blocking team, but we attack, attack, and attack."Marian has a host of girls who can put up a ton of service points. Maureen Kloap contributed nine service points and four aces in the first game. The Fillies compiled 15 aces in the entire contest."We like putting pressure on the other team," explained the Marian coach. "I'm blessed that I have so many girls that can serve as well as they do which helps us be successful."Whenever Millersburg strung a few points together, Marian always had an answer to keep momentum on its side.Abigail Stankiewitch had 10 kills in the match and always seemed to come up with a big point, or a piece of the ball defensively when needed. Fellow Fillie Emily Pilla was also aggressive in the contest with seven kills.Abby O'Donnell has been performing well all season, and was another standout for Fallabel's squad. O'Donnell recorded 26 assists, and numerous finesse placement shots which kept the Indians off balance all night."We're a very experienced and poised team," said the Marian coach said. "I think we're a better team than last year. We've played top AAA and AA teams. We can definitely hold our own."Millersburg head coach Richard Berg has done a remarkable job with the Indians' program since he took over last season. The Indians were just a combined 6-28 in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The Indians won a dozen straight matches coming into the contest against Marian and were the Divisioin III champions."It was certainly a great goal of ours to beat Marian," Berg said. "A secondary goal of ours was to at least take one game from them. They were very good at serving and receiving the ball."Millersburg's best game was the third one, which the Indians put 18 points on the board."We started pulling our receiving together and they (Marian) made a few mistakes that helped us out," added Berg. "We tried to get a little closer to that 25-point mark but unfortunately that didn't happen."Millersburg qualified for district competition and still have volleyball to play in 2014."This is a well-bonded team," Berg explained. "Once in a while they get down on themselves but I remind them of what our purpose is and what our plan is.."The Fillies will play Nativity, a five-set winner over Blue Mountain , on Thursday night at 7p.m. at Martz Hall in Pottsville in the Schuylkill League championship."We'll look at some film and practice some more in preparation for our next game," said Fallabel. "The way you prepare in practice is the way you play when it matters. Our undefeated regular season record means nothing at this time in the season. If you lose, you go home and I made that very clear to the girls."
