The final resting place of Jim Thorpe Borough’s namesake has recently been the site of frequent vandalism.

Borough officials said the land at the Jim Thorpe mausoleum site, off North Street, has been damaged several times this year, mainly from tractor-trailers and buses.

“The latest incident was quite substantial,” Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said. “A tractor-trailer destroyed the grass from one entrance, all the way around the tomb, out to the other entrance. It did not miss one spot.”

On Wednesday, Police Chief Joe Schatz said his department was working on several leads.

“Witnesses have said it may have been a CRST truck,” Schatz said.

Through the fundraising efforts of the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame, two 8-foot statues depicting Thorpe’s athletic abilities have been erected at the mausoleum site.

The first statue, which depicts him playing football, was unveiled during the 11th annual Jim Thorpe Birthday Celebration weekend in May 2007, while the second, which shows him throwing a discus, was unveiled in May 2011.

The Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame is planning a third statue depicting Thorpe playing baseball.

Damage from the latest incident also included the “No Truck and/or Bus” sign and post, and one of the lights near the monuments.

Sterner said the damage total is up to at least $1,600.

The borough was waiting on an evaluation from an electrician to determine if electrical service at the site was affected.

Police are encouraging residents and visitors in the area to be vigilant and report any similar activity, including reporting a license plate number if other damage is witnessed. Anyone with information can contact the police department at 570-325-4995.
