Fillies pull away

It took some time for the Marian Fillies to warm up their engines on Thursday night.

But like most high performance machines, once the Fillies started to fire on all cylinders, it was off to the races. The Ferrari-like Marian full court defense was able to jumpstart the Fillies' offense en route to a 37-17 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley. The Blue Devils (11-7) were able to challenge the Fillies early, mostly due to a strong half court defensive effort and some poor shooting from the blue and gold. The result was a Shenandoah four-point lead after one."The last time we played these girls we were down 35-7 at half. We definitely got out to a better start tonight and defensively I think we played pretty well," said Blue Devils head coach Chris Conroy. "We just have to do a better job cutting down on the turnovers."Turnovers were the key for both Marian and Shenandoah in this one.The Fillies (14-2) took control of the game by amping up the full court pressure in the second quarter. Marian's hectic trapping style proved to be too much to handle for the Blue Devil guards.Shenandoah turned the ball over four times in the first two minutes of the second frame, setting up some easy buckets for the Fillies. The tide quickly turned with Marian leading by seven with five minutes remaining in the quarter.Heading into the half, the Fillies had turned the early deficit into a nine-point advantage."Once we were able to score a bit in the half court then we could set up in our press. We weren't scoring there early on so we couldn't really get into it," said Marian head coach Paul Brutto. "We were able to cause some fits for them and get some easy looks."But we have to do a better job in the half court offensively. They did a really nice job in the first half defensively, but we lack patience at times in our offense. It's something we're working really hard at because come playoff time we can't rely on our press to win us basketball games."It wasn't just the Fillies full court defense that was impressive. Over the years Marian has been known for their tough man-to-man defense and there's little doubt that this year's team is trying to carry on that tradition. The Fillies held the Blue Devils to just four field goals in the second half, while their half court offense improved and set up some high percentage shots inside for post players Savannah Krushinsky (10 points) and Madison Stoyer (nine points)."Our half court defense has been really solid all year and these girls do a great job of talking and working together, on both ends of the floor," said Brutto. "We did a better job of getting some post touches in the second half, but we still need to get more consistent on offense. It's something we'll definitely be working on as the regular season starts to wrap up."BIG RUN ... After a four-point deficit in the first quarter, the Fillies went on a 17-0 run to lead 21-8. They forced 12 turnovers during the run, which propelled them to their easy victory.DISCIPLINED "D" ... The Fillies kept the Blue Devils out of the paint by playing aggressive man-to-man help side defense throughout the night. So much so, that Shenandoah didn't get to the foul line at all.SHENANDOAHA.
