Tamaqua owns boards to gain victory over Panther Valley

The odds of winning a basketball game are higher for the team that has multiple chances to score on a given possession.

Tamaqua outrebounded Panther Valley by a 28-10 margin in the second half of a Schuylkill League contest on Tuesday night. The Lady Raiders dominated the glass and launched 26 more shots than the Lady Panthers. All of the scoring opportunities for the visitors led to a 38-30 victory against rival Panther Valley.Kirstin Jones racked up an impressive 22 rebounds during the win and single-handedly out-rebounded PV in the final two frames."She came up big for us; rebounds don't get enough credit," said Tamaqua head coach Erika Davis. "Normally she's a big offensive threat, but today she played the role of crashing the boards and we needed to get that done. One of our players didn't play tonight, and we told her to step up and hit the glass. She did exactly that and we didn't have to ask her more than once. We praised her in the locker room, and we're very happy to see that."Both teams combined to shoot just 7-of-58 from the floor in the first half and Panther Valley clung to a one-point halftime advantage, 13-12. Tamaqua approached the second half a bit differently, which led to a 15-point third quarter for the Lady Raiders.Davis said, "Anytime we have another opportunity on the offensive end it's a positive for us. We had a lot of opportunities; they just weren't falling for us. We told them they just had to have a short memory and forget about the last shot, make the next one. They definitely shot their way through it and didn't give up."Kayla Sherry hit a pair of three-pointers in the third period and led Tamaqua with a team-high 12 points. The Raiders eventually opened up an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter."She definitely stepped up, she had the fire in her face tonight," said Davis of Sherry. "She fired up her teammates and everyone fed off of her, which is a great thing to see a freshman do. She came off the bench in the second half and her effort doesn't go unnoticed - it was awesome."Christina Dacey led Panther Valley with a 12 points and Chloe Markovich added eight. PV head coach William Lynn noted that his offense seemed to sputter at times."We're getting better; we just need to make our shots - right now we're not making them," explained the Panther Valley coach. "They're (PV) young and they don't think they need to box out; but that's part of being young thinking you can jump everybody. We preach it every day. Our defense is not bad, but our offense doesn't help our defense and then we need to work extra hard. We're missing layups, and they're (opponent) already out and running on the fast break."Davis noted that the progress her young Tamaqua team has made since the first practice of the year is quite encouraging."This is a new stepping stone for all of us," said the first-year Lady Raiders' coach. "There's going to be bumps in the road. How are we going to face adversity? How are we going to respond? There's going to be good, and we have to enjoy it, and we can't dwell on the bad. There's a lot of positive energy and the girls improved so much this season, though it might not show in the win-loss column. At the same time, they come to practice and you would never think that we have this record, they come to work every day."THREE MUSKETEERS… Sherry, Thomas, and Courtney Hoffman combined to score 30 of Tamaqua's 38 points during the victory.EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED… Both of Tamaqua's victories have come against PV this season, so Lynn decided to shake things up a bit, according to Davis. The Tamaqua coach said, "We prepared for every defense possible, except the diamond-and-one and what they gave us. Hats off to him (Lynn). I couldn't' be more proud of the way the kids adjusted, though. The guards took care of the ball and we had a lot of open shots. It was a great all-around effort."GETTING DEFENSIVE… Holding PV to 30 points was Tamaqua's third-best defensive performance of the season.Davis said, "We definitely saw a different team and different fight tonight. It's hard to bounce back when you're consistently losing. We stuck to the game plan, and a ton of credit goes to the kids who adjusted and played hard."TAMAQUAHoffman 2-3-6-8, Hromyak 0-1-2-1, Sherry 4-1-3-12, Jones 4-2-4-10, Ceci 1-0-2-2, Stauffenberg 0-0-0-0, Amershak 2-0-0-5.
