Monarchs fall to No. Parkland
OREFIELD - North Parkland hasn't been the dominant Lehigh Valley Legion team this season as it is most years.
But the Buffaloes are starting to hit their stride. With their full line up finally healthy and in place, they stampeded Carbon County 11-4 Thursday."We have five games left and everyone is here and healthy," said winning pitcher Braeden Duff. "I feel like we can end on a good stretch and get momentum going into the playoffs. Out best pitchers are ready and healthy so I feel pretty good about it."The Monarchs are in the opposite position, as only nine players were available for the game at Orefield Middle School, which has happened before this season and is likely to happen again."It's tough playing with nine guys and having our core guys missing and not having a full team," said Carbon County head coach Donnie Rehrig. "I credit these guys for coming to the game and giving it what they have."North Parkland (7-6) got on the board in the first inning after a double, an error and a walk loaded the bases. A two-out single from William Algard drove in a pair of runs. They tacked on a run on a pair of singles in the second inning and tacked on three more in the third. Another defensive miscue cost the Monarchs runs when an error on what might have been a double-play ball was followed by a sacrifice bunt and Isaac Neal's two-run double that gave North Parkland a 5-0 lead."I thought for the most part we played all right, but you can't give guys free bases on errors," said Rehrig. "You have to take advantage of opportunities, and we just didn't do that."Buffalo starter Braeden Duff cruised along. After giving up a leadoff single to Terry Buss to start the game and a walk two batters later, Duff retired 13 straight Monarchs before Gabe Wagner got Carbon County's second hit of the game, which came in the fifth inning."He's our No. 2 guy and throws well," said North Parkland coach Terry Stoudt. "He moves the ball around and throws hard enough to keep you honest."Duff struck out five and gave up just six hits. The Buffaloes extended their lead to 7-0 with two runs on two hits in the fifth inning. The Monarchs (5-9) finally got to Duff in the sixth. Two hits and an error loaded the bases before RBI singles by Derek Joyce and Chris Whiteman brought in Brendan Carroll and Cody Scherer to make it 7-2.But a single, an error and five walks allowed the Buffaloes to push across four more runs in the sixth. The Monarchs rounded out the scoring with a run on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Scherer.Scherer went 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored and an RBI.Although Rehrig hasn't had his full lineup all season, his team is in eighth place in the 10-team league in which the top eight make the postseason tourney."We're in the playoff hunt," said Rehrig. "At this point, every game is kind of a playoff game. We have to take care of business. We control our own destiny."Carbon 000 002 2 - 4 7 3N.
