Plenty of talent in minors
As All-Star week approaches, it is time to take stock of the progress of the talent accumulated by the trades over the past two years.
The result is the Phillies have a ton of talent worth following. Here is a brief rundown of the Phillies' top-5 minor league affiliates and the progress of the farm system prospects.LEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGSInternational League, North Division46-35, T-3rd, 3.0 GBLehigh Valley is off to one of its bests starts in their nine-year existence. It helps that the team has five of its top-7 prospects according to Baseball America. Only one, catcher Andrew Knapp (BA No. 4) is going to the All-Star Game. He has hit seven homers and driven in 29 runs, but also has thrown out 10-of-33 stolen base attempts. The other two Pig All-Stars are closer Edward Mujica, with his league leading 20 saves, and outfielder Cam Perkins (.283, 4 HRs, 26 RBIs), who is having a steady, consistent season for Lehigh Valley. The team's top two prospects are J.P. Crawford and Nick Williams. Crawford (BA No. 1) is starting to find his way at the plate as he has raised his average from .199 just a few weeks ago up to .229 through Thursday. Williams (BA No. 2) is hitting well (.288, 7 HRs, 38 RBIs) but is working through game issues and suspensions. Despite the issues, the Phillies are still high on his five-tool ability and thrilled with his progress and growth as a player.Jake Thompson (BA No. 3) is the player to watch. In his first five starts of the season, Thompson gave up 15 earned runs. That is the same amount he has given up in his 10 starts since. He has lowered his ERA from over five to 2.88 going into last night's start against Charlotte.READING FIGHTIN' PHILS (AA)Eastern League, Eastern Division57-23, 1st, 6.0 GAThe Fightin' Phils are having an incredible year despite having their team depleted by call-ups. They just figure out how to win games. In Thursday's game, they entered the seventh inning down 4-1 to Harrisburg. By the final out, Reading posted a 13-5 win.The team is paced by six Eastern League All-Stars including catcher Jorge Alfaro (BA No. 5), outfielder Roman Quinn (No. 9), first-baseman Rhys Hoskins, outfielder Dylan Cozens, infielder Jesmuel Valentin, starter Nick Pivetta, and reliever Hoby Milner (4-1, 1.97 ERA, 24 games). The big hitters, Cozens (.279, 22 HRs, 66 RBIs) and Hoskins (.290, 22 HRs, 66 RBIs), are a dynamic duo that have been pacing the offense throughout the year. They are like peas-in-a-pod as they are tied for the league lead in homers and are tied for second in RBIs. Cozens leads the league in doubles (23) and is edged out for the league lead in slugging percentage (.576) by a thousandth of a point.Alfaro has been doing a great job with the staff and with the bat. He is hitting .300 with nine homers and 43 RBIs. Behind the plate, he has commanded a staff that includes Pivetta (7-4, 3.31 ERA).The least known All-Star most likely is Valentin. Primarily a second baseman, Valentin has been hitting lead off with a .288 average.Quinn, who is on the DL with an oblique strain, will probably not participate in All-Star activities but earned recognition by batting .288 and having a .361 on-base percentage.Reading began the season with current IronPigs Ben Lively (7-0, 1.97 in nine starts) and Anthony Vasquez (7-3, 3.28 in 12 starts).CLEARWATER THRESHERS (A+)Florida State League39-29 (1st Half); 4-4 (2nd Half)The Threshers have had a pretty good start to the season. In Lakewood, he hit .240 and stole three bases in his 12 games.Randolph reported to the Gulf Coast Phillies (Rookie) where he has started his return to Lakewood.
