27 win nominations via write-in votes in Carbon

Twenty-seven people were successful write-in winners of Democratic and Republican nominations for borough and township offices in the primary election held on May 16.

The results of the tabulation of write-in votes was completed this week by the Carbon County Elections Bureau headed by Lisa A. Dart, director, with some of the nominations establishing general election races that previously were unopposed. In other cases, candidates who appeared unchallenged on one ballot, solidified their election chances by winning a nomination on the opposing side.Here are the results of the successful write-in nominations by municipality:Beaver Meadows:James G. Leonard won a Republican nomination for a four-year term on the borough council. The ballot lacked sufficient candidates since Democrat Robert J. Cryder Jr. was the lone candidate for three positions that are to be filled by the electorate.Bowmanstown:Chad Everett won a Republican nomination for a four-year term on the borough council. He will join Republican Darren R. Thomas on the ballot and the duo will be running against three Democrats, Barbara B. Eastland, Robert Moyer and Burdell C. Steigerwalt in November. Four of the five candidates will be elected.East Side Borough:Colleen Donlin, Elizabeth Berger, Helen Jones, Sharon Mrozinski and Lisa Jones were all successful Republican write-in candidates in the borough.Donlin received 13 votes to get on the GOP ballot for the four-year term as mayor; Helen Jones, 14, Mrozinski, 12, and Berger, 10, each won nominations for three four-year terms on the council; and Lisa Jones, 15, won the nomination for the four-year term as tax collector.There were no candidates on the East Side ballot on May 16.Franklin Township:Sara J. Keiser, tax collector, won the a Republican nomination with 47 write-in votes. She was unopposed on the Democratic ticket and will now appear on both ballots.Jim Thorpe:Joanne Klitsch and Edith Lukasevich, Democrats who were successful on the Democratic ballot for four four-year terms available on the borough council, both won Republican nominations as well.Klitsch received 27 write-in votes and Lukasevich received 19 write-in votes. As a result, both candidates will appear on both ballots.The other candidates, Thomas Highland and Gregory Strubinger, will appear only on the Democratic ticket.Mayor Michael J. Sofranko, a Republican, was unopposed in his bid for re-election to another four-year term. He solidified his re-election probabilities by obtaining 13 Democratic write-in votes and will now appear on both ballots in November.Kidder Township:Thomas L. Bradley Jr. won Democratic and Republican nominations for a six-year term on the board of supervisors. He received 39 Democratic write-in votes and 57 GOP write-in votes. Bradley will appear on the GOP ballot with Larry Polansky and as the one candidate on the Democratic ballot. Two positions are available.Also in Kidder, Kim M. Ginopolas, tax collector, received 24 Republican write-in votes to win that nomination. She was unopposed on the Democratic ticket and will now appear on both ballots.Lansford:Bob Silver won the third Republican nomination for borough council that was available and will appear on both tickets for three four-year terms that are up for grabs. He received 60 write-in votes.Marie Ondrus, Joseph Genits and Silver won Democratic nominations, while Irma J. Leibensperger and Martin S. Ditsky were unopposed and won GOP nominations, but will now be joined by Silver on that side of the ballot.Tax Collector Terrance P. McCall solidified his election probabilities by winning the Republican nomination. Along with winning the Democratic nomination, he secured the opposite side of the ballot by collecting 75 GOP write-in votes to win that position.Lower Towamensing Township:Nicole J. Jahelka won the Republican nomination in the Primary Election for the tax collector's position and solidified her imminent election for a four-year term, by winning the Democratic nomination as well. She was successful on that side by getting 47 write-in votes.Mahoning Township:There previously were no contests in Mahoning Township for two positions available on the board of supervisors, however, that changed with Nevin Frey's successful write-in efforts for both the six-year and two-year terms that are available.Bruce R. Steigerwalt, a Republican, was unopposed for the six-year term, but he will now face Frey because the latter won the Democratic nomination with 28 write-in votes.Frey also received 28 write-in votes to win the Democratic nomination for the two-year term and will now face Republican Robert Slaw, who was unopposed.Tax Collector Pauline F. Homm, a Democrat, was unopposed on the ballot. In addition to securing that nomination, she won a GOP nomination as well with 51 write-in votes and will now appear on both ballots.Nesquehoning:Nesquehoning had a shortage of candidates on the ballot for borough council positions, but the number of candidates increased by two when Mary A. Fox and Joshua Jacobs won Democratic nominations for three four-year terms that are available.Fox collected 22 write-in votes and Jacobs received 11 write-in votes. They will now join Rosemary Porembo on the Democratic ticket. There are no GOP candidates.Packer Township:No one appeared on the ballot in Packer Township for the four-year term as tax collector. Valerie Kane was successful in winning a Republican nomination with 10 write-in votes and will be the lone candidate for the position in the Fall.Parryville:A race for the four-year term as mayor now exists.Republican Dean Emery was unopposed on that ticket in the Primary and there was no Democratic candidate. That changed when Kevin L. Greenzweig collected 15 Democratic write-in votes to win the side opposite Emery and the two will now meet head-to-head in November.Summit Hill:Debra Ranck received 15 write-in votes from Republicans to win a nomination on that side for three four-year terms on borough council. She also won a Democratic nomination, as did William J. O'Gurek Jr. and William H. Chapman.Towamensing Township:Scott Mosier received 12 Democratic write-in votes to win a nomination for the six-year term on the board of supervisors. He will run against Republican Guy Seifert, who previously was unopposed.Weatherly:A five-person race for four four-year terms on the borough council exists after five persons were successful via the write-in vote process.Only one person appeared on each ballot on May 16. They included Theresa I. D'Andrea on the Democratic side and Jeffrey Miller on the GOP ballot.Both of them won nominations on the opposite ballots and will now appear on both tickets in November. So will Harold Farrow, who won both party nominations with 37 Democratic write-in votes and 102 Republican write-in votes.Also winning a Democratic nomination was Leslie Moyer, who received 32 write-in votes. On the GOP side, Norman Richie received 40 write in votes to win the fourth nomination on that side.
