Activities planned at area state parks
Several activities are planned for Tuscarora and Locust Lake state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County.
Join naturalist Robin Tracey from Tuscarora on July 21 for a hike to Peddler's Grave in Shenandoah Heights. The grave is the site of the first recorded murder in Schuylkill County.Meet at the Miner's Memorial in Shenandoah at 10:30 a.m. and car pool to the site. The hike is moderate and 5 miles in length. Bring a lunch. Pets are welcome but must be leashed at all times and get along with other pets and people. Shine only.Join Tracey on July 25 at 1 p.m. for a spectacular hike to Wolf Creek Falls in Saint Clair. Meet at the north end of the Walmart parking lot off Route 61 in the Coal Creek Commerce Center.This hike is 7 miles and rated difficult. The hike will take participants up the mountain to Wolf Creek Falls and beyond to the reservoir. The hike is dog-friendly, but all pets must be leashed and get along well with people and other pets. Shine only.Join waterway conservation officer Doug Daniels from the U.S. Fish and Boat Commission for a program on the native reptiles and amphibians of Pennsylvania. The program will be held at the Locust Lake Amphitheatre on July 25 at 6 p.m.Daniels will speak about the differences between venomous and nonvenomous animals. He will talk about their habitat and diet. Some live animals will be on hand. In case of inclement weather the program will be held in the program shelter located near the campstore.Join Dr. Rick Bortnick of Delaware Valley College and Laura Weishaupt for a casual class about fungi. Learn about the different roles fungi play in the ecosystem and why they are so important to forest ecology.The program will start in the Tuscarora State Park Visitor Center at 10 a.m. Aug. 1. Following a slide presentation the participants will venture outside to see and talk about fungi in their habitat. Bring a hand lens if you have one.Dress for outdoors, wear sturdy shoes and bring a lunch. The class should be about four hours long. There is a $5 fee for the class and a maximum of 20 people may attend. Registration is required in advance by contacting Tracey at 570-467-2506.
