The Lehighton Borough Council hired two full-time police officers during its meeting last night.

Matthew Arner and Derek Solt were appointed to the positions on the recommendation of Police Chief Matthew Bender.

Arner, of Tamaqua, resigned his position in Cumru Township, Berks County, to accept the local position. He had been working as a part-time officer in Lehighton during his 3½-year tenure in the Berks community.

Solt, a lifelong Lehighton area resident, has been working in a part-time capacity in Lehighton and Mahoning and Franklin townships for the past 1½ years.

The hirings are subject to approval by the borough’s Civil Service Commission.
