Carbon County announces events to honor veterans

Carbon County is honoring veterans over the next week, leading up to Veterans Day.

On Thursday, the commissioners adopted a resolution naming Nov. 4-11 as Green Light for Veterans in honor of the men and women who served this country.

“The residents of Carbon County have great respect, admiration and the utmost gratitude for all the men and women who have selflessly served our country and this community in the Armed Forces,” the resolution states. “Operation Green Light for Veterans Week is a time to honor the service and sacrifice of those in uniform transitioning from active service, and encourage its citizens to recognize the importance of honoring all those who make immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom.”

It urges residents to participate in “Operation Green Light” and place a green light in a window of their home or business.

Christine LeClair, director of the Veterans Affairs office, spoke about the importance of such an initiative, as well as other programs that have worked to help the approximately 5,000 veterans who live in Carbon County.

She said that over the last few years, veteran suicides are coming down in Carbon County. At one time, Carbon was one of the highest counties for veteran suicides.

“The numbers are going down since we came on board eight years ago,” LeClair said. “That’s thanks to programs like Together with Veterans, St. Luke’s Victory for Veterans program, the American Legions, the VFW, Disabled American Veterans. Everyone is on board with combating those numbers so we’re making some headway.”

“It’s a battle we can continue to fight to prevent those suicides,” Commissioner Wayne Nothstein added.

In honor of the area’s veterans, LeClair also announced several events that will be taking place next week.

• The annual Carbon County Veterans Day Parade will be held this weekend in Weatherly. The parade steps off at 2 p.m. Sunday.

• The annual Carbon County Veterans Day observance will take place at 9:15 a.m. on Nov. 10 in Josiah White Park, Jim Thorpe. This year’s keynote speaker is Master Sgt. Robert Yaeger, JROTC non-commissioned officer Army instructor.

• The fifth annual Veterans Day Dinner at Penn’s Peak will be held Nov. 11. Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner is served at 6. Tickets are required for all attending. The event is filled to capacity with over 400 veterans set to attend.

“We’re really excited to go out and support our veterans and say thanks,” LeClair said.
