Northern Lehigh battle-tested for playoffs
Northern Lehigh coach Joe Tout believes the Bulldogs’ demanding regular-season schedule has prepared them for the challenges of the District 11 Class 2A playoffs.
Now, he’s hoping that experience pays off.
The third-seeded Bulldogs will travel to face No. 2 Shenandoah Valley in Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal, a matchup Tout believes his team is well-equipped to handle.
“The reality is we play a very tough schedule,” said Tout. “Of our 10 opponents, we play up in classification eight times. This includes seven 3A schools (one who is boundary-less) and one 4A school. Our other two games are against AA schools.”
Northern Lehigh closed the regular season with a strong performance against Lehighton, an effort Tout believes provided momentum heading into the postseason.
“This week is when our schedule pays dividends,” he said. “We are excited to be playing another AA school, and we feel our schedule now gives us an advantage in this game.”
Shenandoah Valley (7-3) presents a significant challenge, particularly through the air.
Junior quarterback Ethan Bench has thrown for 2,009 yards and 26 touchdowns, directing an offense with several dangerous receiving threats.
Gene Sinkus has caught 37 passes for 678 yards and 10 touchdowns, while tight end David Burrous has 27 receptions for 530 yards and 10 scores. Todd Seiger has added 524 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
“They are impressive in the passing game,” Tout said. “We feel like we have a good defensive plan, and we also feel this is a game where our schedule and playing a team like Notre Dame has prepared us for an offense that likes to throw the ball.”
The Blue Devils also have balance in their offense. Mike Eichisak leads the rushing attack with 580 yards and eight touchdowns, while Joel Nunez has contributed 340 yards and seven scores.
For Tout, the key will be disrupting Bench and preventing Shenandoah Valley’s passing game from finding a rhythm.
“We are very impressed with their speed and athletic ability,” Tout said. “Most importantly though, can we pressure the QB. If the QB has a clean pocket, he is dangerous. We want pressure, and we want them out of their comfort zone.”
Northern Lehigh has reached six district championship games and won three titles (2010, 2021 and 2022) under Tout. Shenandoah Valley, meanwhile, is making its first postseason appearance since 2019 and hosting its first playoff game since 2006.
Tout knows the Blue Devils will be motivated, but believes his Bulldogs have plenty to prove as well.
“To be honest, I’m excited to have this team going there on Friday,” he said. “I think we have a huge chip on our shoulder and want to prove to people that we have a championship level team.”
