“The History of Moore’s Ravine and Glen Onoko” will be the next event in the series of local history presentations as part of Carbon County and Nesquehoning’s America250 Celebration.
Local historian and author Vince Hydro will narrate the visual presentation.
There will be two showings: 6 p.m. Monday and noon on Nov. 7.
Doors open an hour before the presentations, which will take place at the Nesquehoning Historical Society Museum, 157 W. Railroad St.
The event is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the society are appreciated and enable the organization to maintain the museum and presentation space.
In the 1870s, as part of plans to increase weekend excursions to Mauch Chunk and vicinity, the Lehigh Valley Railroad converted Moore’s Ravine into a tourist attraction known as Glen Onoko.
Hydro’s presentation will include:
• The history of the area as a tourist attraction.
• A photographic tour of the falls.
• The Wahnetah Hotel.
• The abandoned village of Hetcheltooth.
• Packer’s Point Lookout.
• The abandoned Railroad Tunnel.
There is ample parking available in the large lot next to the museum; however, the lot has filled up for recent events so people are advised to arrive early to get a good parking spot and seat in the museum.
