Tamaqua Hunger Walk Sunday, ending food insufficiency

The 15th annual Tamaqua Hunger Walk will be held Sunday, bringing area residents together to support local food pantries and a baby food ministry as the culminating activity of the annual Tamaqua Community Hunger Campaign.

The walk will begin at 2 p.m. rain or shine at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center, with registration opening at 1:30 p.m. Participants will walk from the center to Griffiths Funeral Home and back.

Walkers are encouraged to seek sponsors and collect donations, with a minimum contribution of $10 per participant. Checks should be made payable to the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network.

Walk organizers Paul Dodson and Glenn Fritzinger are inviting individuals, families, church groups, businesses and community organizations to participate.

“The Hunger Walk is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together for a common purpose,” Dodson said. “Even a small donation can make a difference when we work together. We hope people will join us, find a few sponsors and help support our neighbors who are struggling to put food on the table.”

Fritzinger emphasized that the walk represents the culmination of a monthlong community effort to address hunger and support organizations providing food assistance throughout the year.

“The Hunger Campaign brings attention to a need that doesn’t go away when October ends,” Fritzinger said. “The money we raise helps local food pantries and a baby food ministry continue serving families right here in our community. We encourage everyone to come out, take a walk and be part of something that helps others.”

The Hunger Walk serves as the final major activity of the Tamaqua Community Hunger Campaign, held throughout October to raise funds and awareness for local hunger-relief efforts that help hundreds of families each month.

Walkers can participate in honor or in memory of someone special, or simply to show their commitment to helping fight hunger in their community.

Residents are encouraged to gather friends and family, seek sponsors and join their neighbors for an afternoon dedicated to making a difference locally.
