Summit Hill Recreation Commission chairman resigns

Kathy Gieniec, who has served as chairman of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission the past six years, announced she is resigning from that position effective Dec. 30.

She told the council, “I will be happy to contribute” to any future activities that the commission conducts.”

She said she will remain as an active member of the commission, but not serve as chairman.

Her resignation follows a disagreement she had with a member of the council in October during which a grant for park improvements was sought on behalf of the commission without her knowledge.

At that meeting, the borough solicitor, Attorney Robert Frycklund, said the commission’s purpose is advisory with hands on operation but fiscally it is the borough’s responsibility. Fiscal decisions are at the discretion of the borough, he said.

Gieniec was upset because she said the grant was submitted on behalf of the commission and being responsible for potentially matching “without even seeing the grant.”

After several minutes of discussion on the matter in October, Council President Joseph Weber said he will get the details and provide them to the council and the Recreation Commission.

Under Gieniec’s guidance on the Recreation Commission, a full slate of events was added in the borough, including exercise classes, seasonal activities which served as fundraisers, and playground improvements.
