Quakake man charged in hit-and-run

A Tamaqua area man will be charged with hit-and-run after he struck a vehicle in McAdoo and kept driving.

McAdoo police located John Pupko, 72, attempting to change the tire on his vehicle in the driveway of his Quakake area home following the incident.

The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. Oct. 8 on Kennedy Drive/Route 309, when Pupko rear-ended an occupied and parked vehicle. The victim said the driver turned onto Taylor Street.

Police viewed video footage from a neighbor and were able to view the license plate. They learned Pupko’s name and address from the Schuylkill County Communications Center.

Police said as they drove south on Route 309, they observed tire drag marks. Officers followed the tracks to a driveway where they saw Pupko crouched down next to his truck, attempting to take off the front wheel.

Police said Pupko looked surprised when officers arrived, and when they asked what he was doing, he said he was removing the tire because he hit a vehicle in McAdoo.

Police asked why he did not stop, but he claimed that he did. He was also charged with failure to notify police of an accident.
