S. Hill fire company hosts open house

The Diligence Fire Company of Summit Hill held an observance of Fire Prevention Week on Thursday with an open house and slate of activities.

Children were given plastic firefighter helmets. Anyone visiting was given a tour of the spacious firehouse and urged to check out the apparatus. Coloring books and other fire prevention items were handed out.

Firefighting tools were on display, including a Jaws of Life extricating device.

A food truck with ice cream and cakes also was on the premises.

Shawn Hoben, Summit Hill fire chief, said about 75 people attended the event.

“I think everybody enjoyed themselves,” he said.

Hoben said this year the open house was coordinated with the annual mailing fund drive.

Residents should have recently received the appeal for donations. Hoben said anyone who hasn’t received one can get one from any fire company member or by visiting the firehouse on a Monday or Thursday evening when training sessions are held.

“The mail drive is our largest source of income,” Hoben said, noting that it is especially important as the result of prices for equipment and other expenses rising faster than inflation.

“The people in this town have been very generous,” Hoben said.

He also reminded people to check their smoke detectors. Free smoke detectors are available from the American Red Cross. To obtain one, residents should fill out a form that the fire department has available and give the department permission to make the installation.
