Tamaqua to apply for $1M grant

Funds would cover new garage for fire equipment, vehicles

Tamaqua Borough will apply for a $1 million grant on behalf of the American Hose Fire Company No. 1.

Council voted Tuesday to complete an application for a statewide Local Share Account grant.

The grant would help fund construction of a new garage to store firefighting vehicles and equipment.

Council received a letter from Ray Schwartz, of the American Hose, with the LSA application request.

“We are anticipating — but not guaranteed — federal funding of $1.8 million from Sen. (Dave) McCormick’s federal appropriations,” Schwartz wrote.

The fire company needs to come up with a financial match, Schwartz said.

“There is no expense to the borough for the grant,” Schwartz said.

The funding would be used to build an engine room on a vacant lot next to the 39 Mauch Chunk St. firehouse.

The resolution passed unanimously, with council President Brian Connely and members Jay Hollenbach Jr. and Kyle Oliphant abstaining. The three are members of the fire company.

Also during this week’s meeting, council hired John Symanski as a part-time police officer.

Council also approved a request to open the metered parking spaces on the borough lot near the Tamaqua Train Station for the grand opening celebration at the Temple University Dental School on Nov. 6.

The spaces will be used by Temple staff and other guests.
