Lansford begins search for new solicitor
Lansford Borough Council will be seeking requests for proposals for a new borough solicitor, as advertisements only produced one potential attorney for the position.
Council at a special meeting Tuesday approved putting out RFPs for a solicitor, which will be reviewed by council members before being sent out.
Council discussed getting RFPs that are already prepared, including from the state Association of Boroughs, or having outgoing solicitor Bob Yurchak draft one.
Yurchak submitted his resignation Sept. 16. His resignation is effective Oct. 14 and stated that he will perform his duties “up to Oct. 14, but not thereafter.”
Council did not discuss the lone attorney who submitted a letter of interest for the job. The letter came in an hour before council’s meeting, Borough Secretary Ashley McLaughlin said, and “the rate was high.”
Councilwoman Michele Bartek quipped, “You’re only going to get what you pay for.”
In other business, council approved:
• Advertising to amend its ordinance to prohibit parking on the south side of East Patterson Street, Route 209, from the intersection of Riley Street going west for 300 feet to comply with a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation highway occupancy permit for the proposed AutoZone store.
• Removing a condemnation notice from the deed for 15 E. Ridge St., which was placed on the property with a prior owner. The current owner, Bob Silver, requested an updated inspection after rehabilitating the property and complying with code. Silver agreed to reimburse the borough for all costs associated with the removal of the order.
• A request from Weatherly police and the Weatherly American Legion Post 360 for Lansford fire police to assist with traffic control, road closures and pedestrian safety for the Carbon County Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 8 with a rain date of Nov. 15.
• A letter of support to secure grant funding for the Anthracite Little League field lighting project. The letter is not a pledge for financial support from the borough.
• The repair of the 1997 bucket truck by Structural Metal Fabricators of Palmerton at a cost of $1,246. The quote is for a hydraulic pump, labor and installation.
• Advertising for part-time snowplow drivers at the rate of $25 an hour for CDL holders, and $20 an hour for non-CDL holders.
• Council announced that it received no bids for the Ashton Park project, which was being done through a grant that expires in December.
