State police at Fern Ridge - crashes

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks reported the following crashes:

• A 17-year-old boy from Effort had suspected minor injuries after a one-vehicle crash at 6:48 a.m. Sept. 9 on Merwinsburg Road, Chestnuthill Township.

Police said he refused a medical services transport from the scene.

They said he was driving a 1997 Volkswagen Golf south when it exited the right lane of travel and struck a tree, boulder a culvert before rolling onto it roof.

He was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed, according to police.

• No one was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 10:45 a.m. Sept. 19 on Route 20 in Chestnuthill Township.

Police said the crash occurred when a 2026 Mazda CX30 and a 2020 Jeep Compass were traveling eastbound. They said the operator of the Jeep began to turn right into a parking lot, at which time the driver of the Mazda swerved to avoid a rear-end crash but the Mazda struck the rear passenger door of the Jeep.

Police did not identify the drivers, or their residences, but said the driver of the Jeep was issued a written warning after the crash.

• Ryan J. Phillips, 36, of West Norriton, had possible injuries after a one-vehicle crash at 5:55 p.m. Sept. 4 at the intersection of Route 903 and Stone Creek Road, Penn Forest Township.

Police said he was transported by personnel from the Lehighton Ambulance Association to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township.

They said he was driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler south when it left the road and hit a guide rail.

The vehicle had disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

• Jeffrey E. King, 61, of Saylorsburg, had suspected minor injuries after a one-vehicle crash at 3:56 a.m. Sept. 26 on White Church Road, Chestnuthill Township.

Police said he refused a medical services transport from the scene.

They said he was driving a 2023 Ford Expedition northbound when he swerved to the left to avoid striking a bear that had entered his path. The Expedition hit a tree and sustained disabling damage that required it to be towed from the scene.

King was cited for driving a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker, according to police.

• Brittany A. Smith, 34, of Kunkletown, was issued a written warning after a two-vehicle crash at 3:52 p.m. Aug. 7 on Route 115 in Chestnuthill Township. No one was injured in the incident.

Police said she was driving a 2025 Jeep Gladiator that hydroplaned on water runoff, causing it to strike the passenger door of a 2022 Nissan Frontier driven by Cesar J. Mercedes Jr., 51, of Effort. They said the Frontier traveled off the road and hit a tree.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene, police said.
