NWL girls volleyball adds three more wins

Northwestern Lehigh volleyball added three more games to its eight-match winning streak recently with wins over Salisbury, Lehighton, and Palmerton. The wins put the Tigers at 9-2 overall and 8-1 in the Colonial League this season.

Each of the wins were 3-0 wins. Against Salisbury, Northwestern dominated play with 25-11, 25-6, and 25-9.

Tiger head coach Mike Maston has been happy with how his team responded after dropping a pair of early matches.

“We had two losses early against Southern Lehigh and Freedom, but we came back from those, and the girls have really pulled together,” said Maston. “We had a big win against Notre Dame and we’re doing a lot of good things on the court right now.”

It was against Salisbury that libero Lexi George reached the 1,000 dig milestone. Maston credits her with being a stalwart on the team since taking over as libero in her sophomore season.

“It’s so important to have leadership on a team and our seniors are great leaders for us. Lexi quickly settled into her role as the libero and has taken control of the defense,” said Maston.

Northwestern battled a feisty Lehighton team but in the end won by scores of 25-20, 25-11, and 27-25. Palmerton was unable to put up much of a fight against the Tigers and fell 25-9, 25-10, and 25-6.

“We know that we can’t take a night off,” said Maston. “There are a lot of teams that can surprise you if you’re not careful. We still have to play Southern Lehigh and Notre Dame again, we have a tough nonleague game against Nazareth, and as you get later in the season teams are fighting to get into the playoffs, so they can all be dangerous.”

The schedule gives Northwestern Lehigh the opportunity to avenge a season-opening loss to Southern Lehigh when the two teams meet at Northwestern this week. The Lady Spartans are 9-0 overall and in Colonial League play and are the only District 11 team to have wrapped up a spot in districts already.

After that, the Tigers are at Saucon Valley (4-4, 4-4) to wrap up play this week.
