New owners hope to breathe new life into a longtime eating establishment in Lehighton.

H&H at the Boulevard, is taking over the former Boulevard and Nonna’s Ice Cream, at 59 Blakeslee Blvd. Dr. E., Lehighton.

Katie Macalush, owner, said the business was named after her two children, Hannah, 7, and Hudson, 5, and that it’s looking forward to becoming part of the community.

Macalush said she and her husband, Daniel Hunsberger, decided to close their previous business, Katie’s Country Kitchen in Schnecksville, which they had been running for the past six months, to make way for their newest endeavor.

“We’re super excited, and thought it was something we should try,” Macalush said. “This is a bigger adventure, and we thought we’d put all of our efforts here.”

Macalush said the business planned to open Friday, and added it will start with breakfast from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week.

She said breakfast items will include cream chipped beef, eggs Benedict, sausage gravy, all homemade from scratch; Belgian waffles with ice cream, griddle, French toast, pancakes.

“We want to get our feet wet, give them a taste of what we’re going to offer, give them a place to go, meet everybody in the community,” she said. “We feel blessed for the opportunity that kind of came long; this just made more sense in the big picture, and are excited for this journey.”

Eventually, Macalush said they will look to expand their offerings to include homemade soups made from scratch, and eventually a salad bar and meal entrées with fresh seafood, steaks and pastas, and also bring back some of the Boulevard favorites, such as the deviled clams.

In addition, she said Nonna’s Ice Cream will continue to remain open seven days a week, from 2-9 p.m.

“We’re going to keep Nonna’s staff,” Macalush said. “We’re looking to add a few employees on the restaurant side of H&H.”

Macalush thanked owners Darcy and Nino Caruso “for being so welcoming and taking over their spot. They’re very kind to us.”

She said her husband, Hunsberger, with whom she resides in Orefield, has 15 years of experience and will be one of the chefs.

Additionally, Macalush said her mother, Denise Macalush, will run the restaurant with them as well as other family members.

Previously, the family owned Katie’s Macalush Family Restaurant in New Tripoli for 14 years.

Two years ago, Macalush’s father, Jim Macalush, who grew up in Jim Thorpe, passed away.

Katie Macalush said that in the near future, H&H at the Boulevard plans to have an all-you-can-eat fish fry and other specialty nights.

“Our pricing is pretty average,” she said. “We make it affordable with different options.”

Macalush added they also want to be involved with youth sports teams to hold events such as dine and donate.

“We hope we can meet the community and hope the people who come in become family,” she said. “We plan to service everybody as well as we can.”
