An upcoming musical performance was promoted during the Monroe County commissioners meeting on Wednesday.

Commissioner David Parker, who is a member of the America250PA Monroe County committee, said auditions for “1776 the Musical” were held and rehearsals are underway.

“It’s going very well,” Parker said. “We’ve got actors and musicians from all over the county. I think we even have one from Northampton. Back in 1776, we were part of Northampton. This was Northampton County back then.”

The show is being hosted by the America250PA Monroe County committee.

“1776 the Musical” was written by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards. It debuted on Broadway in 1969, and went on to win three Tony Awards, including for Best Musical. The audience watches as Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Richard Henry Lee strive to unite Congress to support the Declaration of Independence.

Performances will be held at 8 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 24, and 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 in the auditorium at Notre Dame High School, 60 Spangenburg Ave., East Stroudsburg.

Parker, said tickets are available at the commissioner’s office at 1 Quaker Plaza, Rom 201, Stroudsburg for $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $12 for students. Tickets also are available by scanning the QR code on the posters, through the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau online at www.poconomountains.com/event/1776-the-musical/31999/, and at the door.

“It’s going to be great,” Parker said.

Monroe Commissioner Sharon Laverdure said, “I think what’s really nice about this production is it’s a combination of adult folks from the county, as well as school age children from the county.”

Laverdure said she thinks it is “really unique and really wonderful.”
