Coaldale will soon have an ordinance that regulates keeping chickens in the borough.

“We have the chicken ordinance,” borough solicitor Robert Yurchak announced at last week’s monthly council meeting.

Members received drafts of the ordinance for their review.

“The only thing I left blank was the amount of acreage for the particular property involved,” Yurchak said.

Council President Rose Hoben suggested 4,356 square feet, or about a tenth of an acre.

“That gives you enough property to sufficiently have a chicken,” she said.

Borough Secretary Kim Gavornik said the draft ordinance allows up to four chickens on a 0.10 acre tract.

“So if you own 0.20 (acre), you can have eight,” Gavornik said.

Chickens have to be kept in a secured area, according to the ordinance.

Council expects to adopt it at its October meeting.
