Pleasant Valley Intermediate School had a little smoke incident Monday morning, but no fire.

Superintendent James Konrad said there was an issue with an air handler, but “all is well.” The students evacuated the building safely and calmly and will be resuming their classes as soon as the fire chief says it is all clear to go back inside the building.

PVI Principal Sabrina Albright sent a message home to all of the parents and guardians letting them know about the morning’s unplanned event. She told the families, “All students and staff did a fabulous job evacuating the building. All students are safe and accounted for.”

Albright also told the families in the message that no staff is in the building, so there is no one to answer phones.

“We will be able to resume normal building operations in a short period of time,” she said.

Polk Township Fire Chief Billy Tippett said the smoke was created by an air handler that overheated and caused a smoke condition in the school. The overheated air handler tripped a breaker.

At this time, it is not known the extent of any damage. Superintendent Konrad said that the school district will be looking into the issue.

Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company and West End Fire Company handled the call, as well as Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder, Kunkletown Fire Company, Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Company, Penn Forest Fire Company #2 and Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company.

“All responded with positive pressure ventilation fans to remove smoke and an odor of smoke from the school,” Tippett said.
