Bowmanstown drafts data center ordinance

Bowmanstown solicitor Lisa Pereira discussed the first draft of a data ordinance at the borough council meeting this week.

Even though there are differences between Palmerton and Bowmanstown, she modeled the draft “after Palmerton’s very conservative ordinance.”

In the draft, she marked “the commercial area of Bowmanstown” to be zoned for data centers, but noted that Bowmanstown “may need to amend their ordinances” to allow for special exceptions.

Currently, Bowmanstown “does not allow for any conditional uses” and that “it is worth looking at” to determine whether “the zoning code should be updated.”

She recommended the draft be sent to the Carbon County Planning Commission for an initial review to make sure that Bowmanstown’s ordinance “reflects the needs of Bowmanstown.”

The council voted unanimously to submit the draft to the county.
