A social club recently formed to create social and recreational opportunities and facilities that promote social connections has eyed a Lower Towamensing Township facility for space.

Resident Heather Pasquariello told the township’s board of supervisors on Tuesday that the Community Connections Social Club is looking to build a partnership with the township.

Pasquariello explained the group is seeking space for its nonprofits to use, and said members are looking at Stoney Ridge P.A.R.C. along Fireline Road to offer a community after-school program.

“We are looking to operate solely on our own,” Pasquariello said. “We are looking for a partnership.”

Pasquariello said the group’s long-term goal is to establish a community center.

She noted the group recently held a Back-to-School Swim-N-Sing event at Palmerton Memorial Pool, and also has an event scheduled in October.

Supervisor Michael Takerer asked Pasquariello how the group would plan to utilize Stoney Ridge P.A.R.C.

Pasquariello said they would like to use it as an after-school program.

She said they would look to rent out the facility on Saturdays for events to generate revenue, with Sundays dedicated to community activities.

Pasquariello said they would also like to use the facility to offer an after-school program on weekdays, and believes the facility would be the ideal fit.

“We are starting to look at a needs assessment, and really see what the community needs are,” she said.

Pasquariello added that they’ve also contacted neighboring Towamensing Township and Palmerton borough.

Board Chairman Jay Mullikin told Pasquariello that supervisors will take a look at the proposal.

Previously, she said it was recently reported that the Palmerton Area School Board and the Palmerton Borough had preliminary talks about a community center.

Pasquariello said at that time she hoped to advance that idea by forming a 501(c)(7) Community Connections Social Club, with the long-term goal of establishing a community center.

Palmerton Area School Board director Earl Paules said at a May meeting that borough officials met with district representatives to discuss a proposal that could place a new police station on part of the district’s 4-acre field along Seventh Street. No formal agreements were reached and no votes were taken during the meeting between borough and school district officials.
