Three area state police barracks plan Labor Day holiday traffic enforcement initiatives for the period of Friday through Monday.

Officials at the Lehighton, Stroudsburg and Bethlehem barracks said troopers will be actively searching for impaired drivers in an initiative aimed at reducing the number of people who are drinking, using drugs or abusing prescription medications from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle and placing themselves and other persons at risk.

Police from the Lehighton station will conduct DUI checkpoints on roads in Carbon and Monroe counties; officers from the Stroudsburg office will systematically stop vehicles at selected locations to briefly observed drivers for articulable facts and behaviors normally associated with alcohol or drug impairment; and police from the Bethlehem barracks will once again conduct their PADEEP and STEADD programs on roads with that barracks’ jurisdiction.

PADEEP will target aggressive drivers and seek to reduce the numbers of persons speeding, and having seat belt and child seat infractions in their vehicles.

Troopers will also be concentrating their efforts on distracting drivers who violate statutes regarding texting while driving, handheld mobile telephone, prohibiting use of hearing impairment devices, prohibiting text-based communications, careless driving and reckless driving.

In addition, STEADD expert troopers will specifically focus on apprehending motorists who operate their vehicles under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.

Police said crash data for 2025 shows state police across the commonwealth investigated 747 crashes and made 535 DUI arrests, along with investigating six fatal crashes and issuing 6,860 speeding citations.
