Tamaqua awards paving contract for Hunter St.

A major street resurfacing project will soon get underway in Tamaqua.

A Tuesday’s meeting, borough council awarded a contract to pave Hunter Street between West Broad Street and the borough line to Ronnie C. Folk Paving Inc.

The project will cost approximately $139,800.

It will be covered by Community Development Block Grant funds, borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt said.

But before it gets underway, council voted to move some of the CDBG funding that had been earmarked for demolition to the paving project.

“We’d like to do all of Hunter Street but we are short on funds,” Steigerwalt said.

He contacted Schuylkill County officials, who help administer the funds.

“It looks like we have a little more demolition money than we need right now,” Steigerwalt said.

He suggested moving a year’s worth of demolition funds to the Hunter Street project.

“We still have a pretty good amount of demolition funds available to us,” Steigerwalt said.

Council voted in favor of switching the funds.

CDBG funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
