One killed in Franklin Township fire

One person has died when fire destroyed a home Saturday night in Franklin Township.

Fire chief Lynn Diehl said fire was reported at 11 p.m. at 495 Cherry Hill Road.

The fire was called in by neighbors and people traveling on the turnpike who saw the blaze, Diehl said. The mobile home with additions was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

Parryville, Bowmanstown and Lehighton companies were called to the scene. Walnutport Fire Company was called as the rapid intervention team.

Firefighters remained on the scene over three hours.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal was called to the scene.

During the investigation by the State Police Fire Marshal, the resident’s body was discovered within the residence. At 12:18 p.m., the Carbon County Coroner’s Office was notified and requested to respond.

The resident was pronounced deceased by Deputy Coroner Jeffrey Leighton at 12:45 p.m.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to assist in determining the cause and manner of death. The autopsy will be conducted at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensics Center.

The coroner said a presumptive identification of the decedent has been made; however, a positive identification has not yet been established. Until additional forensic analysis can be completed and the identification confirmed, the identity of the decedent will not be released.

The Carbon County Coroner’s Office, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police and Franklin Township Police Department, continues to actively investigate this incident.

Diehl said three dogs also perished in the blaze.

Diehl said the fire marshal has determined the cause to be undetermined.

“All mutual aid companies worked well together,” Diehl said. “It wasn’t the outcome we wanted but the firefighters did an excellent job.”
