Coaldale eyes chicken law

Coaldale will soon have an ordinance that will regulate keeping chickens in the borough.

“I started the chicken ordinance and I got about 80% through,” borough Solicitor Robert Yurchak said at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.

As he prepares the ordinance, he said, he wanted to know who would issue permits to residents wanting to keep chickens on their property.

“I didn’t know if it was the zoning officer, code enforcement officer or the borough secretary,” Yurchak said. “My thought would be having (borough secretary) Kim (Gavornik) do it.”

Gavornik admitted that she doesn’t know much about chickens or raising them.

Resident Kirk Waidell then suggested that his wife, Chriss, could assist.

“She would take it very, very seriously,” Kirk Waidell said.

Gavornik noted that Chriss Waidell is on the borough’s zoning hearing board. She said she could issue permits based on Chriss Waidell’s advice.

“She can review it and say, ‘Kim, this one is good,’” Gavornik suggested.

“It’s always good to have a second opinion,” council President Rose Hoben said.

Yurchak said he should have the ordinance ready for the September meeting. At that point, council will vote to approve it for advertising.

It could be adopted as early as October.

Yurchak said he is also looking at an ordinance regulating e-bikes and scooters. He provided copies of a sample ordinance to council for its review.
