Towamensing hears storage unit zoning requests
A conditional use hearing was held in Towamensing Township for Sunrise Lehighton Group/Lakeside Self Storage, located at 10 Homestead Lane. The 2.13 acre property is zoned for light commercial. Storage units will range in size from 5 feet x 5 feet to 10 feet x 30 feet.
A conditional use hearing was held in 2023 where Sunrise Lehighton Group was required to have restrooms, water, septic and fire repression.
In May 2026, Sunrise Lehighton Group/Lakeside Self Storage Development had a Stormwater Operation and Maintenance Agreement and Site Improvement Bond approved pending resolution of the Site Improvement Bond.
In June 2026, Sunrise Lehighton/Lakeside storage builder Tony Luongo from Brecknok Builders LLC presented changes to remove the onlot septic and water. He was advised to apply for conditional use for modification. Luongo explained that, “We redesigned the interior to meet fire code.”
At the August Conditional Use hearing, Sunrise Lehighton Group requested approval for fire separation, not sprinklers, and not needing to have a septic system as there would be no restrooms and no one physically manning the facility. The group was represented by Claudia Shank from Mcnees, Wallace and Shank.
Builder Tony Luongo noted, “We will redesign the interior to meet fire code and building code.”
The building is expected to be 25,200 feet with climate controlled storage units, all of which would be accessible from the inside only.
Board Chair Guy Seifert asked if costs of installing a septic system were part of the reason for not building one, to which Luongo replied, “Some of the costs are a definite concern.”
Seifert also asked about emergency exit doors to which Luongo replied that they will meet building codes when it comes to the point as building plans have not been submitted yet.
Township Attorney Tom Nanovic asked if both fire suppression and relief for sewer are not both approved if it’s “all or nothing?” to which Luongo stated, “That decision has to be made by the client, Sunrise/Lehighton group.”
A decision about conditional use modification adjustments will be made prior to the next township board meeting at 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 3.
