The man who was shot by Lehigh Township Police after he approached them with a knife on July 29 was committed to the Northampton County Prison in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.

State police at Bethlehem charged Dean Deibert, 49, of Heritage Lane in Walnutport, with three felony counts of aggravated assault; possession of an instrument of crime and terroristic threats following the 3:51 p.m. incident.

State police were called to the home after it was learned that the a Lehigh Township officer had discharged his firearm while responding to a domestic incident at Deibert’s home.

According to police, Lehigh officers arrived and found Deibert yelling outside his home.

Police said he had “nunchucks” in his pants and went inside.

Officers spoke to a 71-year-old woman, who said Deibert forcibly entered her room, and shoved her to the ground. He choked her, hit her in the head and threatened to kill her. A neighbor also said that Deibert threatened her.

Police said Deibert did not respond to officers’ requests to exit the home. Police then entered the residence and saw Deibert exit his room with a knife in his hands.

Despite being told to drop the weapon, he approached officers with it.

An officer then discharged two rounds from his gun, striking Deibert in the chest and arm. Another officer deployed his stun gun.

After being struck, police said Deibert dropped the knife and dropped to his knees. At that point, he told one of the officers, “You’re a dead man. Do you understand that? You’re a dead man.”

Officers rendered aid as they placed Deibert into custody. He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg for treatment.
