A Tamaqua boy is showing others that it’s OK to eat differently.

Jaxon Green, 9, stars with Elmo from “Sesame Street” in a video for a song that celebrates tube-fed children.

“It was fun,” Jaxon said.

Jaxon, who has been tube-fed since he was a baby, is featured alongside Elmo, his mother, Amy, and his sister, Carly, in tube feeding brand Compleat’s video for the song, “What is Better Than How.”

“I wasn’t really scared. I was just a tiny bit scared,” Jaxon said of filming.

The video begins with Elmo saying that he is hungry and asking Jaxon if he is going to eat.

“Oh, Elmo,” Amy says, “Jaxon is eating. He gets his meals through a feeding tube.”

Jaxon points to his belly to show his tube, and the song begins.

“Everyone eats in their own special way. Some use a fork, some use a spoon, some use a tube,” Elmo sings.

It’s a catchy song, Amy admitted, and one that Jaxon has been singing “nonstop” since filming wrapped.

Jaxon was diagnosed with Eagle-Barrett syndrome at birth.

“He was born needing a kidney transplant,” Amy said.

At 6 months old, he began peritoneal dialysis.

“One of the side effects with the dialysis is that fluid goes onto your abdomen — so kids aren’t hungry. You have pressure on your stomach so you don’t feel hungry,” Amy said.

Toxins also build up, making food unpalatable.

“Jaxon only ate food from about 4 months to 6 months and then he stopped,” she said.

He had a kidney transplant about 5½ years ago.

“He’s doing really well health-wise, but for the first four or five years of his life he really didn’t eat. You almost have to learn how and then there is anxiety around it,” Amy said. “At this point, Jaxon can eat, but he’s really not great at it, so keeping him tube fed is the best way to keep him healthy until he can fully transition into eating enough to maintain himself.”

Jaxon said that many people — including some of his classmates at St. Jerome Regional School where he’ll be a fourth grade student — don’t realize that he is tube-fed.

“He wanted people to see that just because you have something like a feeding tube doesn’t mean you can’t do all those things,” Amy said.

Amy noted that she was looking for casting calls for Carly, a vocalist who’s delivered the national anthem at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, Pocono Raceway and other events.

“I came across this call looking for children who were tube-fed,” Amy said. “I took a glance at it and thought, ‘It sounds perfect for Jax.’ ”

She wasn’t sure about pursuing it at first, but when she saw the casting call on other sites, she decided to check it out. She and Jaxon’s father, Jason, mentioned it to Jaxon.

“We said, ‘It’s totally up to you. Is it something you want to try or not?’ because he doesn’t want everyone to know he’s tube-fed,” Amy said.

Jaxon thought it over and decided to give it a shot.

“He said, ‘I kind of think I want to let the world know that it’s OK if you’re different,” Amy said.

The family submitted information, photos and videos of Jaxon. Interviews followed between the family and the directing team.

“At that point, we had no idea who we were filming with — it just said something like ‘a famous childhood icon,’ ” Amy said.

It wasn’t long after that they learned that they’d been selected — and that Elmo would be the guest star.

“They said, ‘We would like to film with all three of you,’ ” Amy said. “They said they wanted to do an authentic family.”

During filming, Jaxon met with other kids who are tube-fed.

“That was one of his favorite parts,” Amy said.

Jaxon enjoyed the filming process and seeing the final cut. All the while, he’s continued to do what he loves to do best.

“I like to read. I like to play with Legos. I like to do soccer. I like to swim. I like to do baseball. I like to do basketball. I like to do tennis,” Jaxon said.

“He likes to keep busy,” Amy said.
