A Lehighton man faces drug charges after overdosing inside a cell at the Carbon County Correctional Facility late last month.

Wesley Behler, 34, an inmate at the Carbon County prison, was arraigned by District Judge Beth Dodson on charges of possession of a controlled substance by an inmate, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bail was set at $25,000 unsecured, and his preliminary hearing on the charges is tentatively set for Aug. 12.

According to court papers, Behler was found unresponsive on June 26, days after his arrest in Lehighton on drug charges. Behler had numerous wax packets of white powder clutched in his hands and on the floor around him, court papers said.

Prison staff rendered aid, administering three doses of Narcan, an opioid reversing drug, and called an ambulance.

County detectives arrived before the ambulance left for the hospital and inquired about his status. Behler, who was in a drowsy state, said continually, “I want to go to rehab,” court papers said.

Prison staff seized the wax packets and placed them into evidence, and a plastic zip lock bag with feces on it was also recovered from the cell, court papers said.

Detectives interviewed Behler four days later at the prison and he admitted to possession of the wax bags, which he said contained fentanyl.

He told detectives he suffered an overdose in Lehighton, was taken to the hospital for treatment and was taken into custody on a warrant. During the transport to the prison, he managed to take the bags from his underwear and put them in his rectum, he said.

Behler then said he retrieved them and sniffed the powder, leading to the overdose in the prison, court papers said.
