The Kunkletown Thrift Shop in the Eldred Township Community Center now has air conditioning.

Jonathan Gula, the Public Works Department supervisor, said at the supervisors meeting on June 15 that because the supervisors approved spending up to $6,500 last month for temporary air conditioners for the thrift shop, they purchased 12 of them from Walmart for about $360 each.

“Those are all installed (and) up and running at the community center,” Gula said. “We did have a slight issue with some power. Part is the old building; some of the outlets were only 10-amp breakers, so we did run some temporary power from the boiler room to those rooms. They’re all up and running, and it looks pretty good for what it is.”

It isn’t a perfect situation, because the temperature does still rise when the doors are open and closed and there are several people in the building.

“Other than that, it seems to be working pretty good. Donna has been happy with it,” he said about the thrift shop’s manager Donna Deihl.

Because Deihl was not at the meeting, Supervisor Susan McGinty read her report for the meeting.

“She said air conditioners are making a very nice difference,” McGinty said.

The thrift shop is holding an inventory sale this month in the gymnasium, and the theme is hodgepodge.

“They just want to try and get some inventory out,” McGinty said. “The thrift store is closed for the month of August.”

The Kunkletown Thrift Store hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Gula added, “Also last month, we got awarded the Pocono Visitors Bureau grant to improve the front of the community center. We removed the bushes and the topsoil and planted grass in front of the building. Once the grass starts growing and that’s done, the other portion of that will be the solar loaded planters to be installed by the subcontractor.”

As for roadwork, Gula said New Enterprise was awarded earlier this year to do paving work. Prep work was scheduled for Wes Flo Court, and Borger Road between Fiddletown and Church Road, and between Church Road and Silver Spring Boulevard for Friday. Scratching and overlay was scheduled for Monday on Wes Flo Court, and Borger from Fiddletown to Church. Overlay work was to continue on Tuesday on Borger from Fiddletown to Church, and on Church to Silver Spring on Wednesday.

“The week of Aug. 3, we’re going to put shoulders on Borger Road, and then Aug. 10, that week, we’re going to start doing our in-house seal coating, weather permitting,” Gula said.

Gula also said they will be working with the public works crew from Ross Township to do oil and chip, and flagging in their township and then in Eldred Township. Both townships have work crews of about four men.

“They’re going to come for a week and give us a hand, and then we’re going go with them and get them a hand for a week,” he said.
