Event tonight

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity will host its annual Volunteer Appreciation Event tonight.

The event is set for 6-9 p.m. at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort. It is a free event for anyone who has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity at least once in the past year.

Plate replacement

Rep. Jack Rader will host a free hard-to-read license plate replacement event at Tunkhannock Volunteer Fire Company parking lot on Long Pond Road from 2-4 p.m. Thursday.

Summer concert

The Chestnuthill Park in Brodheadsville will hold a summer concert Friday, beginning at 7 p.m.

PVEN programs

• The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is holding a Back-to-School Extravaganza for students in grades K to 12 by giving them free school supplies, new sneakers, new underwear, new socks, dental hygiene products, menstrual hygiene products if needed and more.

Registration is required, so call the PVEN office at 570-992-3136; sign-ups are open through the end of July.

• The free Meals for Kids program is continuing through Aug. 13 from 8-11 a.m. every Thursday.

Families will receive five days of shelf-stable breakfasts and lunches for each child up to age 18. Young people over 18 who are enrolled in school programs for students with disabilities are also eligible.

There are no residency or income requirements; all the PVEN needs is the number of children in need of the food. Verify that there are still openings by calling the PVEN at 570-992-3136.

Special meeting

Former Pleasant Valley schoolmates Brian Snyder and Ryan Argot met each other at a recent firefighters event in Harrisburg. Both are active firefighters — Snyder in the West End volunteers and Argot in Hampden Volunteer Fire Company in Cumberland County.

Contemporary music

St. Peter’s UMC will host evening Contemporary Worship Services this Sunday at 7 p.m. and again on Aug. 22 and Sept. 26. The church is located at 924 Route 115, Saylorsburg.

The service will include praise, music, dance and a message of hope. Youths, young families and couples are all welcome.

Church picnic

St. Matthew’s EC Church Grove, Kunkletown, will be the site of the Northeast District of the Evangelical Congregational Church annual picnic on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. It offers a traditional picnic menu, devotional message, music and various activities.

The Grove will also be used for the Aug. 9 and Sept. 13 summer services. Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair.

Service, picnic

Effort UMC is having only one worship service on Sunday, at 10 a.m., and it will be a hymn sing. The church family will then hold its annual church family picnic, beginning at 11:30 a.m., hosted by the Women’s Group of Effort. It will be held in the Pavilion, rain or shine.

Games will be available for all.

Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided by the Women’s Group. Guests are asked to bring a side dish and lawn chairs.

VBS ahead

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is holding its Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon July 27-31. It will include music-rooted Bible adventures and wild games, as well as tree-top treats, sticky Scripture and an “Imagination Station.”

Polk meetings

The next meeting of the Polk Township supervisors is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The Parks & Recreation Committee is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. July 30.

The Historical Society and the Veterans Memorial Commission are not slated to meet this month.

Ross Township

The Ross Township Park Committee is looking for new members. If interested, call the township at 570-992-4990.

Free concert

On Aug. 1, Effort UMC is hosting a free community concert from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Vocalist Randy Blakeman will be performing acoustic and country music.

A light dinner and games for the kids will be provided. Bringing a lawn chair is suggested

Camp sign-ups

The Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers the following summer day camps:

• Get in Touch with Nature for ages 7-10 — Aug. 3-7.

• Adventure Camp for ages 11-13 — Aug. 3-7 or Aug. 17-21.

Camps are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with early care and late pickup available.

Learn about bog

Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers guided walks into the Tannersville Cranberry Bog each Wednesday through Nov. 4. There is a cost.

The two-hour walks begin at 10 a.m. at the bog and are conducted by an environmental educator. Participants can learn about how the bog was formed and about its plant and animal life.
